[Problems] CDs can't be read on older ver WINDOWS
[Problems]
I have a DELL computer that should operates using Windows XP but to save cost, i installed Windows ME. Then i recently i bought new CD-R. Then i have a portable CD-RW DVD Burner. I try to plug & play them. The computer recognised the device. But when i put in the CD-R it can't be read. I tried putting the CD-R into the CD-ROM drive. It can't be detected too. [Facts] I do know older computers can't read later version CD-R. The CDs and burner are 100% working fine. Because i tried them on a Windows XP. I tried putting the CD-R into the CD-ROM drive. It can be read. [Solutions] It is impossible for me to upgrade to Windows XP. So i think the only way is to upgrade the driver. Am i correct? Or is there anyway to solve the problems? Can i just transfer the driver from the newer computer to the older one? To make the matter worst, the computer don't have a connection. How can i transfer the drivers? Can i just go to WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/ to get the driver files and overwrite those in the older computer? Once again, it is the driver for the portable burner that i am going to upgrade not the CD-ROM drive. |

I have experienced the same problem on older computers. The problem was the driver for the video card. I solved it by installing a card that the operating system disk had a good driver on. If this is your problem? Can you swap video cards long enough to go on line and obtain the right driver for the card, down load it, swap cards again and install the driver? |

Brand and model of the drive, is this drive old? if your not sure of the drive use this link http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...?pid=3&lang=en
then post the info, other considerations on reading burned disks is the software used Nero/Roxio etc. , and method used to burning the disk. |

one thing that can cause hangups, is if you burn them in windows xp, and do not "close" the cd session on the disc.
xp will still read an open-ended cd, because of a utility called "direct cd" being included in the windows xp installation. older versions of windows did not come with this, so, an older version of windows will need to have roxio's "direct cd" installed in order to see open-ended cd's. as far as drivers for cd burners, they haven't needed drivers since windows 95 came out. the external case that the burner is in, that might need a driver after all.

[Conclusion]
When i put in a data CD, the computer can read it. As Windows ME don't have own burning features like what XP does so i will need a burning software. I think that will solve the problem. I also think that installing latest drivers for the computer won't solve the problem. This is because when i plug in the external burner, the computer will have a drive for it. It means the computer recognise the burner. Just that it don't have burning software, so it can't read "Blank" Cds. |
