Connected USB firelite HD to a PC running newly installed XP pro SP2, HD had 40GB of Information stored, could access the info without a problem on any other PC as soon as I pluged it into any USB port. However, HD didn't appear in MY COMPUTER, I went to administrative tools, saw the HD with an allocated partition, right click on the drive and created a partition and assigned a letter to it and made it active but WITHOUT FORMATTING IT. Went back to my computer to access the HD, I was asked to format it every time tried to access the info. Is there anyway the HD can be accessed without having to format it so I don't lose any info? please, very important indeed info is on it,many thanks.

but the format query only comes when you have it on your computer ? what kind of a harddrive is it ? if all fails you could try to open the external enclosure and wire it to the computer via an ide cable.

yes, only when I have it on the PC, is there any other way I can access the info on the HD other than having it on the PC? it is a firelite USB external HD. It doesnh't have an enclosure, so I can't open it to connect it via an IDE cable, only connect via a USB or PS2 cable but the PC doesn't recognize it with a PS2 cable at all after this format problem occured.
