usually the hard drive is going,so back up anything you do not wish to lose straight away
d/l and run the h/d manufacturers diognostic utility on the h/d do you have s.m.a.r.t enabled in the bios as it is there to give prior warning

Running chkdsk is a good idea in any regard, and you should do it anyways.
Regarding hard drive utilities, you should look up what your hard drive is and go to the manufacturer's website where you can download utility programs for their hard drives. SMART is the Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology which, in a nutshell, records problems and errors the hard drive is having with itself (not necessarily the data like you'd clear up with chkdsk and such) and reports a warning to you if a certain number of them occur which indicate possible failure. You'll need to go into your BIOS (press <F2> or <DEL> to access Setup on boot) and check to see if SMART is enabled. It is recommended you back up your data as the sound and freezing can be an indicator of hard drive failure. |

Ok I will run a chkdsk, maybe that will solve some problems, may it be that the Hard Drive is not properly compatible with the motherboard? As this has happened before, and has usually led to new installation as I end up getting some BSOD or the other.
How can I find out which make my hard drive is? |

You can look in the device manager, under disk drives, which will usually just give the model number, not necessarily the manufacturer. However, if you search the model number online, you'll find the maker. Or, you can open up the case and look at the hard drive. The manufacturer, and other info, will be on the top side of the drive.

Use the above link for HDD diagnostic tools. Your drive is on the way out. Back up any critical data ASAP. If the clicking is too persistant to work with let the computer cool down then try again. If it still doesn't give you enough time. Place the drive in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer for about an hour. Then place it immediately in the computer. This may give you enough time. |

Well I just set it up 2 days ago so there is really no important data, I will try those tools when I get home, and I am going to record the clicking so when I go to the repair shop I can make them listen to it, as sometimes it doesn't happen. I remember last time this happened it was that the information couldn't be read from the hard drive by the computer, and the reader head thingy was slamming from side to side trying to find stuff.

Like that several times on end, and it freezes the computer in that way too.. Also I have noticed in my Task Manager, that the CPU usage has become very eratic for the first 5 minutes after start up.. What about the jumper settings and stuff? How can I check them? My hard drive number is ST3200826AS ... I searched but had many different makes.. |

Download and use the SeaTools Desktop Edition given in crazijoe's link to TACKtech. This diagnostic program is specifically designed to check your hard drive for problems for Seagate hard drives (made by the manufacturer itself). Running this could help you find out what's wrong with your hard drive.
