Not getting full use of hard drive
Motherboard: ECS RX480-A Socket 939 ATI Xpress 200P ATX AMD
Video Card: XFX GeForce 7600GT 256 MB PCI-E 16x Master Hard Drive: Samsung 250 GB 7200 RPM IDE Slave Hard Drive: Maxtor 120 GB 7200 RPM IDE Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core 4600+ 2.4 GHz I'll start off with what happened. My 120 GB slave used to be my primary hard drive. I bought a 250 GB hard drive along with my entire new system. So when I put it all together, I made my 120 GB hard drive my slave, and my brand new, blank, 250 GB hard drive the master. Installed Windows XP on it, older version, without SP2. So here are my two problems: 1. (more important) It's a 250 GB hard drive. In My Computer, it's only 127 GB. In Disk Management, it says 127.99 GB NTFS Healthy and 104.89 GB Unallocated. How can I get them to just be one 250 GB hard drive? Or, I guess, 232 GB. 2. (minor) My slave HD was made the C drive by default, and my master hard drive was made drive F by default, with my two DVD drives D and E. Is there a way to switch them up? I'd like C and D my master and slave HD, respectively, and then E and F my two DVD drives. Any help on this would be great, thanks. |

Hello:
the problem you are having is you need to have SP-2 intergrated onto the windows XP disk at time of install this process is called slipstreaming and its easy you need a cd-rom burner program that can handle .iso files like nero 6 or above and roxio cd creator are a few popular one here is the process to slipstream: here goes download auto streamer version 1.03 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4444.html then download service pack -2 to a folder on your "c" drive / its own folder is best / make sure to pick the "network version of Sp-2 or multiple computer version" because this is needed in order to get SP-2 into a folder / if you select the version for one computer it wont go into a folder / instead it will integrate directly into windows scroll down the web page / this is the one you need Download and Deploy Service Pack 2 to Multiple Computers "Download this version of Windows XP SP2 if you need to deploy it to multiple computers over a network" Look mid way down the webpage GET THE SERVICE PACK http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../winxpsp2.mspx afterwards its damn easy / open autostreamer / it will ask you to for the source of windows XP and also where the source of the SP-2 are the source of the Win XP OS disk can stay in the cd-rom drive / the SP-2 you will have downloaded to a folder - get it to navigate to the folder / thats pretty much it dude >>>> after you push the button to do it / when its done it will make a file as you name it >> like "win xp-2 once you see the file that it created after making the intergrated "new" version / you simply click on that little file icon / your cd burner program should take over from there and make you a "bootable" win xp-with SP-2 on it now thats pretty much it / the rest will be exactly like the first time you installed windows / no difference joe __________________

you will need to do a reinstall of windows on the sata drive with the new xp disk >>>> reinstall not repair
now on to changing your drive letters >>>> that one is a tuffy in my book you would need to remove the power plugs from all drives other than optical in your computer at the time you are doing your win xp reisntall on the sata drive >>> then the install process will "see" no other drives and therfore place what it thinks is your only drive at the "C" drive postition you will need to change the jumper on your current C drive to slave or it will battle the bios to use the C drive letter also 232 gigs is the capacity of your new drive according to windows >>>>> you see windows calls a gig 1024 megs where as the drive makers call a gig 1000megs if you multiply 24 x 250 thats what windows will report as less than the full 250 ???????

Rather than fight trying to fix a new windows installation on the drive , just redo the drive installation(you have nothing on it to lose by formatting the drive and starting fresh). You'll be way ahead of the game. Download SP2. (You really should install it anyway). Incorporate it into a new windows install disc by slipstreaming Install only your new 250 gig drive as master on primary ide channel, don't install the slave for now. Setup the drive using the samsungHardDiskDrive/utilities Don't use windows. Using this utility checks the drive (drives do come from the factory with defects, and prevents windows from using any data left from the old install) Install windows using your slipstreamed disk Install your slave drive Your drives should be lettered as you want them if you put the slave hdd in the slave position on primary ide cable. Thanks everyone. All of these replies came while I was sleeping, and I fixed my problems while I was waiting for them. I'm not even quite sure what I did. I ended up backing up all of my info onto an external HD. Formatted both of my internal HDs, installed a pirated SP2 version of Windows on my 250 GBinternal HD, formatted, installed older valid version of Windows on it, and it worked. Yeah, kind of weird. But it's all good now, and thanks to your info I can now create a slipstreamed version for next time which will be very helpful. During all of the formatting, my drive letters got changed to what I want them to be.
Yeah, kind of lucky I'd say. Thanks everyone. |
