Formatting alternatives

I have to replace the hard drive on my laptop. It's completely dead. I have a new, blank replacement but need to know the best way to re-initate the exchange. I have the back-up disks that came with the computer originally. Would that do the job? I was hoping to transfer everything from another laptop I own, using Norton System works, but it is not the same mfg. From other threads it sounds like this could be a problem because of the different components involved. What do you guys suggest I do?

I would suggest you get windows onto the new drive with a clean install. Afterwards, you can network the two and transfer any files from the one to the other. Using a hard drive directly from another manufacturer will definitey cause problems.
