New Seagate HD Install XP sp2 Norton Ghost IO Error

I have installed a new Seagate 80GB 2.5" HD in my IBM R51 Notebook, with 3 partitions 40/10/30GB. Each time I perform a Clean install of WinXP Pro SP2 and update all Windows files and IBM drivers. Then I run Norton Ghost 9.0 to backup the OS partition (40GB). Norton always reports an IO error:

Error: E7C3000F: Device\\.\PQV2SnapShot4 cannot read 4,096 sectors starting at LBA 449,368. Error 0000045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0xE7C3000F).

Norton suggest running Chkdsk /R (4 to 6 times) from the command prompt. I do this but each time, chkdsk finds more and more bad clusters in different files. Finally, the system is so corrupted that it will not boot.

When I run Seagate Seatools, it does not show any errors even when I do a Deep check.

I returned the new drive and got a replacement, and the same thing happens.

Is there a problem with the Seagate 2.5" Momentus 5400RPM 80GB hard drives ST980815A?

BTW, all partitions are NTFS formatted. I do not get any indications of problems with the drive unless I run Norton Ghost 9.0 or chkdsk /r.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Heard that there are problems with acronis too.

Even without Ghost, when I run chkdsk /r on this and the previous new Seagate 80GB 5400RPM ST980815A in my IBM R51 P4-1.7Ghz 700MB+ RAM notebook, I still get numerous bad clusters in the files.

Then each time I run chkdsk /r it finds more and more bad clusters until the HD is un-bootable.

I would like to completely check the HD before going to all the work of installin the OS (WinXPPro SP2). I used Seagate's SeaTools and Disk Wizard Starter Edition to Zero write the drive and check the drive. Seatools did not find any problems, but chkdsk will every time I add the /r switch.

Is there another tool for checking and marking bad sectors?

Thanks in advance for your help.
