Trying to retrieve data

Hi, can anyone please tell me how retrieve my data from my old hard drive. My old computer died and I purchased a Dell. I want to transfer the data file and folders to my new computer. The harddrive from the old computer had my operating system on it and I used a password to log in. I can't get the info off or see it. I was told it's because of the password. I asked The folks at Best buy when I was over there recently. they said they could get my data but for a 75$ fee. I just started college, I ain't got that kind of money......plus I want learn how to solve the problem. Thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

If you're new Dell has XP Pro installed you can hook up your old drive as a slave and take ownership of the old files from any administrative account. To do this you need to turn simple file sharing off by going to the Folder Options of Windows Explorer, click the view tab and scroll down to the bottom of advanced settings. Uncheck use simple file sharing. Now you have a security tab when you go to the properties of the private fodlers. From there click advanced navigate to the ownership tab and add yourself as owner. Check the box to change ownership of all subdirectories and files. Now go back to the security tab and add yourself with full control.

Thanks so much, I'll give it a try. I do have one other question. The new dell uses a different configuration for connecting the hard drive than for my old drive,so I can't plug it in, but I was told there are external devices that allow you to connect via usb. Would that work also?l

yes, that should work also, however they cost about $30 usually. Also, they can be more stubborn. If you have the PATA connection for your cd/dvd rom you can disconnect one of them and hook the hard drive up there until the files have been recovered.
