Cannot do A disk cleanup

When I go to my computer,right click on the C drive, then properties, then disk cleanup, the the disk cleanup frame comes up with calculating and scanning compressed files, but the progress bar just sits there with about 2 progress bars. How can I get this to clean the hard drive?

Thank you very much. I followed the info given for disk cleanup tool stops responding while compressing old files,and deleted the compress old files in the registry and it worked.
