usb 2.0 hard drive by maxtor

I was wondering if al usb 2.0 stuff is backwards compatable becuase I have a dvd r drive that says usb 2.0 is required but I think I only have usb 1 yet it still works, the reason I am asking is becuase I found a maxtor 400gig hard drive that is usb 2 and am wondering if it will work.... I think it will work if I have 1.1 I gotta find out how can I do this?

there is a very good possibility that if you go to your motherboard makers website they will have an upgraded driver for your usb controller which will get you to usb 2.0

but to answer you question; yes most usb "stuff" is backward compatible but it low substanitally reduce its performance to run att at the 1.1 speeds.

personally i would use a PCI slot USB port add-on card which are 2.0 compliant before I settled for 1.1 speeds

check out newebb.com if this idea suits you

please dont hesitate to ask more questions

If you insert something that is USB 2.0 into a USB 1.1 port, windows will popup and say "this device could run faster". Also, if you go into System Properties (Hold down the Windows Key and Pause/Break), click Hardware and click device manager. Open the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section. If you have USB 2.0 it may or may not say: USB 2.0 Open Host Controller. It's not guaranteed to have it if you have 2.0, but if you have that 2.0 Host Controller, you deffinitely have USB 2.0.

Here is the sound driver

4.51.505 2003/08/22 update

OS Netware / Sco Unix / Sun Solaris / Linux / Win9x / Win98SE / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP

Description Realtek RTL8100C Driver Version 4.51.505

File Size 2.42 (MBytes)

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

the USB is different from what I am used to with Asus boards >>>> most all other models have the USB driver listed >>> yours does not

I am VERY sure there is a way to upgrade your USB controller to version 2.0

I would start with the most recent bios update >>>> then update the INF chipset driver too >>>> one of those two updates will improve your USB controller

here is the INF driver

V1.03U 2002/05/20 update

OS Win2K / WinXP

Description Win2k/XP chipset driver 1.03 package update
Pls remove the audio utility NVAPanel first before install the new drivers.

File Size 8.9 (MBytes)

here is new bios file

1007 2003/08/20 update

OS All

Description A7N266-VM BIOS 1007
Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx

File Size 214 (KBytes)

you need to use Aflash tool 2.21 for updating bios

this is the utility needed to flash bios

2.21 2002/12/23 update

OS DOS

Description Aflash V2.21 Utility to update the motherboard flash BIOS - (DOS)

File Size 30.29 (KBytes)

once you have researched and found these files / download them and then ask questions if you need install assistance

I am not 100% sure that updating these things will give you USB 2.0 however I am most confident that they will!

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

In the GENERAL download box there are three drop down menu boxes

select "motherboard" from the upper most box
select socket A 462 from the middle box
select your motherboard model from the third menu

print out the thread which I listed all your drivers

then the general download will take you to all the files for your motherboard. Pick them of the ALL section >>> & match them up with prior to downloading with the ones I pasted previously

I stand corrected: you board does NOT support 2.0 natively.

However adding in a PCI to USB card will however give you 2.0 support
