Hard Drive IDE Cable Problem

Ok heres the deal, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2.
I went into the control panel and went to admin tools then event viewer
under system there are constant errors with the source listed as disk and atapi.
now the solution it gave was to replace the IDE cable which thats fine.

My question is, I have been having problems when I run graphic intense programs where the computer monitor will just go to a pixalated screen with multi colored box like shapes and the computer will freeze, I was just wondering if this would be causing that or if there would be something else causing it.

I have not replaced the cable yet but I'm going to soon.
I just want to know if this is causing that problem or if they are 2 totally seperate problems.

Thanks

it's difficult to say. if the info from the HD is getting corrupted then anything and everything can run weird or crash unexpectedly. replace the IDE cable, as you are going to do, and then run some of these applications that are crashing to see how they run. you'll probably need to do a scandisk on the HD with the new cable to see if windows detects any errors with the file structure.

I got a new cable and installed it, and ran scandisk, still having the same problem... Seems no one can tell me how to fix this except saying that my vid card is bad, but I don't understand how that can be when it runs fine in other computers and such. Anyways thanks for your reply.

Oh after I installed the new IDE cable the system no longer freezes when this happens it just goes all hay wire with the clored box like things and the system is still running.

try and isolate when the screen gets all pixelated. you say it happens with graphic intensive software - what are you referring to here. if it doesn't freeze what do you do to get the screen back to normal?

it pixalates when I run things like Diablo 2 or full screen games or Google Earth and do to many things to quickly within the game or leave games when it maxs out the CPU load or zoom in to quickly on Google Earth. And I have to restart the computer when it does this, I have to totally shut it down and let the monitor go to where the light turns amber then turn it back on again.

the first thing to do is to re-install the display drivers. download the latest from the website and uninstall the current ones. then restart the pc pressing F8 to boot windows VGA mode. then install the new drivers.

this could also be an issue with temps and the video card. take the side cover off and make sure the fans are clean and spinning. you could leave the side panel off with the side thats open pointing up to let the heat dissipate quicker and run diablo or something else to see if you still get the pixelated screen.

you can install pcwizard and watch the temps there.

I have reinstalled the drivers as you stated same problem, people brought up this being a heat issue before but the side of my case is off and I have a Box Fan sitting next to it so I don't think this would be a heating issue on top of the fact that I have 2 case fans and the heat sink fan, the proc runs a little hot from between 112 degrees and 125 degrees but thats mainly cause my proc is over clocked, was that way when I got the computer.
Does the technical information that is normally sent to Microsoft help ya'll any? cause I have a saved document with the technical info it sends to microsoft when this happens. when it registers a problem.
Let me know. and thanks for all the info and help thus far.

I'm not sure if this info helps but I figured I would put it on here anyways.
I sent the microsoft report thing and it just said it was a conflict with the video card driver that it needs to be upated (newest version is what I have) or hardware acceleration needs to be reduced (don't really want to do this cause then it makes most of my programs inaccessable)
But heres the tech info
BCCode : 100000ea BCP1 : 81D34DA8 BCP2 : 81DF85E8 BCP3 : F8969CB4
BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

Heres the microsoft website it gave me for the error.

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response...86adb14&SID=11

Thanks again for all the help
