WD Raptor 10,000 RPM Sata? DOA?
I bought one, it was a 72 gig 10,000 RPM WDRaptor HD, after a couple hours of trying to get this thing to work, I got reason to believe its DOA, I manage to get it to register in the Bios set up, it registers in the My Computer setting as being there but nothing on it, 0 MB Used and 0 MB free, it wont register it even after booting off Windows 98 boot disk, it refuses to do much anything, I unplugged both CD Rom devices, plugged just the HD into Sata 1, all it did was register my C Drive as a Bootrom device or whatever, Fdisking it wont work because it wont read it in Dos, possibly a Dead on Arrival drive here?

Hi Real,
Couple of questions, you list several OS under your name, but then you talk about Win98. Which OS are you trying to load on this baby. Second, talk to us about your motherboard, like what is it, because that might give a clue to what needs to be done. Next, have you tried using the WD utiity to partition and format this baby. It won't work totally until you have it formatted. Last, please tell me you want to use NTFS partition/format on this one and not Fat32.

My System is listed under avatar and all is where the HD is getting installed, I am installing Windows 2000, i may go back to XP Home edition again, but way my Windows 2000 CD is, I gotta put in Windows 98 first, then upgrade it to Windows 2000, it wont let me put 2000 in off the bat because it says it can only be used in Windows.
I have tried Partitioning this thing now, but each time despite it registering at startup or in the bios, wouldnt come up as a C: or D: drive, one point like I said I removed both cables from the CD Rom drives and only hooked up the HD onto Sata connector 1 in hopes it work, but each time the C: drive I get is the ramdrive one, and it didnt go to D: or E: either, it just plain out doesnt operate for some reason, its why I believe it might be a DOA. Now while it being active as a 0 MB used and free drive on the desktop in my computer, its not even as much registering the size of it or nothing, and I did format it and sound and look like it was working at that point, but at the end it says unable to complete format, so I dunno...

on a side note, I am able to write to it, or least seems that way, as I drag stuff into the drive and then look to see its there, but this only on the desktop when I look into my drives. So maybe it aint dead, although getting this drive to show up in DOS on floppy boot is a problem, maybe a 98 Bootdisk wont work with this drive? it was quick formatted from my desktop into a NTFS format.
also what I dont get is, its showing as 66.6 Used and 69.1 free, and this is only a 74 GB hard drive, capacity says 69.2, this drive is acting bizzaro.

If you have to install Windows 98 on it first, that could be a problem. Windows 98 and FAT don't like large drives like that, and they were way before SATA. I would try to install Windows XP on with it formated as NTFS, and if it still doesn't work, then there might be a problem with the hard disk.

well my other HD, which is 7200 RPM and 80 gigs which is also a SATA, worked fine with Windows 98, although the NTFS format might be the problem since Windows 98 disk only sees Fat and Fat32 file systems, but I mean on the current deck top in My Computer section, I am able to access the Hard Drive, copy content to it, it be there and all, although Format and Quick formats dont work, it did the first time, but they both at the end come up as Unable to format, I dunno what the error is. I do know a hard drive shouldnt act this strange with registering 120 GB worth for whats only 74 gigs, as noted above with the numbers used and free.

Hi,
If you have it formatted to NTFS, you won't be able to put Win98 on it, because Win98 will not work with the NTFS. That is the barrier that you are seeing. You might end up being better off putting WinXP home back on it for now so you can get it up and going.

it works, I had to go through the trouble of getting a program off WD Website which would convert it into Fat/32 format but then it only read so much of the HD in that format, so I converted the entire 74gigs into NTFS, and Windows XP Read it.
its just I never seen a computer not even register or show a hard drive in Bootup Mode/Dos Mode just because it didnt have a File system on it at all or was NTFS.

Hi,
Bottom line, "it works." Glad you got it going because this is one heck of a drive and you will love it. Have a great day.
