Installing a new hard drive after a crash
The 40gb hard drive on my compaq presario 500 running windows xp crashed. I bought a new 203gb Maxtor hard drive and installed it. I ran the quick restore. It was successful by all appearances. When I tried to boot up I got a message CPU fan not detected. I had also installed a new fan because the old one had a broken blade. I opened the cover and verified that the fan was indeed running. I continued to boot up and got a blue screeen saying windows had stopped booting up to protect itself. The problem was UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_SOMETHING
