Hello, I wrote a couple months back about my HD suddenly failing with a NTLDR is Missing message (see: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1141878705). I am
finally done with school and able to slave the broken Maxtor drive to the newer Western Digital HD. Upon restarting the computer after slaving the Maxtor, I went into My Computer and found the HD drive showing up as drive E. However, it is being listed as a 10 meg HD instead of 200 gig HD that it is. When I click on the drive, I see: ntdect.com ntldr All the help from the earlier post was of no help in the end. I was told that I should have been able to slave the old HD to the new one, start the computer and wa~lah, find the old HD waiting for me to open it and drag and copy my files out of it. What is going on? I'm feeling very anxious now. The bad drive in question is a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 ATA133 200 GIG HD 7200 RPM Since mid-March I've been running my computer on the new Western Digital HD using Windows XP SP2, so it was formatted to those standards. Thank you. |

it might be worth running a data recovery program to see what it can find on the drive, there are a few about as a quick google will find ( I did have a few bookmarked but lost my list a while ago ).
Someone else may have some other idea's P.S this information was posted a while ago, it may be possible to set your slave up as a master again and try this after disconecting your current master to protect your current data........ While searching for an efficient fix for this mean error i came across with this fix file called ntldr fix which allows you to boot back in to the windows and perform your fixes. Was not an easy search hit :) http://www.tinyempire.com/shortnotes...dr_missing.htm ntldrfix.exe Basicall run ntldrfix.exe and it will copy itself to a floppy disk. Boot from the floppy and try to boot with the options. One of the 10 options will eventually boot into windows. Then you have to reverse the last thing you did. Driver change, deleted files etc.. If it doesn't boot without the floppy then you can go to the root of the C: drive and change boot.ini to boot.ini.bak and copy the other files into the root. Then you probably wont have any problems booting in. Then you need to tweak the boot.ini file as the boot.ini file you just placed will bring up a funny boot screen everytime you start the computer. I would personally look at the data recovery programs first

Actually, that was the first thing I ever tried. Did everything on the guy's page but never had any luck whatsoever. I tried everything I could to bring the NTLDR back to no avail. So that is why I have now tried just making the bad drive a slave to see if the new master drive could tap into the old one. This also has not worked. Thank you for recommending the page though. |

I just realized that the new HD is formated using NTFS while the old one is in FAT. Is this the potential problem? How do I fix it? Both hard drives have only used the exact same Windows XP SP2 disc to start them both initially.

Alright, I ran the PowerMax diagnostic test from Maxtor. The results came back as the device has failed. The good news is that Maxtor is replacing the hard drive since its still under warrenty. The bad news is that I still cannot get the data off. The estimates I'm getting is well over $400 to recover this data. I do not think its worth that, but I feel physically ill thinking about the stuff that will be lost (I had gone to my grandparents shortly before the crash and my photos were on the HD for example). I'm dling and trying every data recovery program I can. Any other suggestions at this point?

I finally found a program which managed to go in and retrieve my entire HD, Ontrack Recovery Tool. I have managed to copy all my data and burn it in just one night. All 150 gigs. Apparently having next to no programs running equals super fast burning times also.
Yesterday I recieved the replacement HD. I want to thank all of you for your kind help. Why this particular program worked when none of the others would, I cannot answer. However I am grateful for the gentle nudges and pushes which led me to this. Hundreds of dollars have been saved, my data has been saved in full, and I am happy with the results. Thanks! |
