Problem with installing my slave

So I bought this slave drave, a 160gb Hitachi. It worked for about 8 months, and then it lost all its files. So I was like whatever. I disconnected it from my computer for a while. Now I have a different comp. And when I try to boot up any comp with this HDD it fails to fully boot. The OS(XP) freezes after the screen with the blue bars going by, the screen before the login interface. Before that it would boot, but say files where corrupted. I don't know what to do. I put it in CS and slave. My mobo is a MSI P8657G-ABA SR1010V NA430. I think it may be the problem with my BIOS. But I have no clue what to do.

Hi,

I would suggest that you go to the drive manufacturer's disk utility and download it and use that to partition and format the drive. That usually works when you do it that way. Here is a link to all of them:

http://tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Special Note: Partitioning and Formatting a drive will remove all data.

I think you will need the jumpers on there. No jumpers works as a rule for Western Digital drives that are alone on the ribbon cable.

Put your other drive on the same cable to Master and place it on the end of the ribbon cable. Put this one as Slave and place it on the middle connector on the ribbon cable.

If you put this one alone on a ribbon cable, it must have the pins set to Master and be on the end of the ribbon cable. You CAN NOT have a slave without a master on the same ribbon cable.

I need also to mention that if you are trying to boot from this drive that had an OS installed from another computer, it probably will not work. That is why the clean install is always the best or if it is too late for that a Repair/Install will work in most cases.

Post back with questions or concerns.

Lol I got it working with help of my little bro. I didn't think I would have to reformat it before booting up the OS. I tried using the manufacturing software via Floppy disk, but it didn't work. So my bro just gave me his samsung software to reformat the drive, and it worked like a charm. But some reason my time booting up is lengthened. Lol I had jumpers correct. (Diagram is on the HDD). Thanks for the help guys.

Go into the BIOS and make sure the boot sequence is set properly.
Tap the DEL key while booting to enter Setup. Here you will enter the BIOS, look for the boot sequence and make sure your booting from the C:\ (IDE-0) first. Set the rest as cdrom, then floppy if you have these installed.
