Is there a driver compatible with XP, for the Epson Stylus Scan 2500?

Everywhere I have looked online has said "...use the USB connection and download the driver for Windows 2000...."

Is there no way to work round this?

It looks like you are correct. You will have to use the Windows 2000 drivers.
