Rage 128 Pro, can't install drivers
So I've googled some and understand that people have some problems with ATI and Win XP.
I just moved to my dad, brought my harddrive and put it in a computer he had for me. I'm playing this MMORPG game and need the graphic card to work. I went to ATI's homepage, downloaded the drivers for Rage 128 Pro for WinXP but when I run it it gives me a "The display driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed in your system." Can anyone help me? -Stephanie |

Hmm, I don't know. I checked the card and it says Rage 128.
I checked ATI's drivers and the only thing they have under "Motherboards with ATI Graphics" is "Catalyst 6.2 Windows XP - Motherboard/IGP Drivers". I'm totally lost. |

pull the side cover off the computer and check if the video plug goes into a card in a slot or a connection to the m/board
if it goes to a connection on the m/board look for the drivers on your m/b setup disk,or in the driver section of the m/b manufacturers site

Just sends me to http://www.ati.com/online/403/leech.asp, says it's an unauthorized downlaod and gives me a link back to the front page.
If I try to right-click and save target as from your link it saves a leech.html :( |

double check in the device manager what it lists as the card.if you have posted the correct one
check to see if the m/b also has an onboard graphics chip,if it has it needs to be disabled to run the card

is your bios version 1009 or later as they added some extra support for ati cards
in the device manager uninstall the card reboot tapping f8 and choose vga mode when windows finishes rebooting disable a/virus install the drivers again reboot the computer and see if you receive the same error message uncle macro is the expert on ati but he is not online at the moment,i will pm him to have a look as he will be sure to know what is wrong your m/b supports a 1.5v card,i am wondering if that has something to do with it

So I chose to uninstall via the Device Manager. It asked me to restart.
I tried to enter Safe Mode but here we have a second phenomenon. It won't start in Safe Mode, hehe. It stops at Mup.sys which I heard can be kinda comon problem. Anyhow, I rebooted again, pressed F8 and chose VGA Enabled or something like that, it looked like 640x480 or so. I tried to install the drivers, same error. :( I really appreciate your help btw :) <3 -Stephanie |

First of all: I wouldn't pay any attention to MUP.SYS. MUP.SYS gets blamed for lots of things because it just happens to be the last line displayed before Windows has any number of different problems. The fact that it just displayed MUP.SYS doesn't tell you anything useful. It just tells you that "something's wrong".

What BIOS version does your motherboard have? This page explains how to check it. Like dai said, there may be a BIOS update for your motherboard which fixes the problem. You need to check your BIOS version to see if you already have the update. The Device Manager screenshot you included makes it look like Windows has correctly installed a default driver for your video card. That kind of driver is out of date but normally works fine. A Rage 128 is a very old card so the default driver in Windows XP should be about as capable as anything you can download from ATI. Exactly what problem is your MMORPG complaining about? What's the exact error message? |
