cd rom issues

hi i have a presario 5062. just upgraded from windows 98 to 98se. after that the cd rom went out. we replaced it and now there is no d drive and we cant find any sign of cd rom in the device manager. when windows starts it says

device driver not found: mscd001
No valid cd rom device driver selected.

C:\> rem LH \cdrom mscdex \ D:msc0000

the computer would not recognize the new cd rom so i took the cd rom out and saw that it was jumpered to slave. the old cd rom was jumpered to master so i changed the new one to master as well. now when the new cd rom is connected the computer will power but only stay at the Compaq logo with a blinking line in the top left corner.. seems like its stuck there when the cd rom is hooked up. i disconnect the cd rom then it preceeds to load windows. also the power light on the cd rom dosent light up. i am really stuck on what to do so any help at all would be much apprishiated. thanks!

Hi,

Before we go too far, check the other drive on that ribbon cable. For example, if the drive on the end of the ribbon cable is set to master with the jumpers (it should be that way), then the drive in the middle of the ribbon cable must be set to slave. Just be sure they are compatible.

Every slave drive setting must have a master on the ribbon cable. Every slave drive must be on the middle of the ribbon cable.

Every master does not have to have a slave. However, every master must be on the end of the ribbon cable.

As a personal preference, I don't use the Cable Select settings, although it will work in most cases if BOTH drives are set to CAble Select. (Note: They come from the factory set as CS in most cases)

Make sure your Bios Setup menu has the PnP setting to Enabled for Win98.

The other issue, if a drive does not light up, it usually indicates either a dead drive or a bad power connection from the power supply to the drive. Try another connector and make sure it is in tightly.

Post back with questions concerns.
