Sound problems
Problem is -no sound- sometimes. eMachine T3256, AMD XP3200, on board nVidia nForce2 chipset, nForce 6 channel audio, XP home, multimedia keyboard w/volume and mute.
There was a momentary power outage which caused a re-boot about 2 hours before I downloaded and installed Real Alternative 1.47 (Media Player Classic included). RealAlternative advised updating the nVidia drivers which I did (1.5 hours via dialup). After the installs I tried playing some music samples from Amazon which only worked on the Amazon player but not on their Real PLAYER links. Next time I booted up I could not hear the modem dialing, and the hotkeys would not unmute the volume or allow it to be increased or decreased. I tried to listen to phone messages stored on my computer in Pagoo(internet call handling service) and got the message 'Another audio program is in use. Please stop all other audio programs and try again'. I don't know what other audio programs are running or how to find out. I also found that the 'SM Bus Controller' and the 'Ethernet Controller' have yellow ? on them in Device Manager and no other problems showing there. Onboard sound is enabled in the Bios. So, I don't know what to do next. . Any help?TIA, lou |

problem found-fixed
I had mistakenly downloaded nVidia gForce4 drivers since that is what a sticker on the front of the case says.
I actually needed nForce2 drivers. everything working ok now. loufurr |

If you ever get/or have a 5.1 speaker system and you realize you don't have all speakers working correctly in games try using the Realtek codec directly from the realtek site. nVIDA's version of the driver sounds great in heaphone mode and 2.1 but has issues with 5.1. Glad your up and running ok at least. :)
