no audio device/error in device manager

I posted this in sound card but I didn't get any responses so I probably posted it in the wrong forum, so I'll try here in hopes for a response :)

A friend of mine dropped off his piece of junk computer that he bought for $100 today asking me to see if I could fix the sound problem he has, I can't seem to get anything to work so I'm hoping I might be able to get some advice from you guys.

He's got Windows XP sp 3

Bios Info:
ASUSTEK Computer INC A7V333
Version ASUS - 42302e31
(I can't find any option even with the word Audio throughout the bios menu)

Sound has never worked since he bought it. We formated and reinstalled windows but no luck.

When in Sound and Audio Devices Properities it states No audio Device. Can't get it to play any sounds under Sounds, and everything under Audio is grayed out. In device manager I have an error "Realtek High Defination Audio" as well as Unknown device below it. I tried to follow the kb111888sp2.exe work around but while trying to install the driver I got the error message "This Device cannot start. [code 10].

The only sound I can get through the speakers is when the computer is booting up I hear a lady voice saying "System Completed power on self test" then a few moments later I hear "Computer now booting from OS" and this sound is coming through the speakers.

So... Suggestions?
