Hi,
The registry on this system is corrupt beyond repair and so I'm left with no option but to perform a clean OS install, something I've never attempted before. I'm positive I know what I'm doing but there are a couple of things that are bothering me. Assuming all goes well, I get onto my shiny new desktop and update Windows, how do I know which devices in my system require drivers that will have to be downloaded and won't come on the OS disc? If someone could compile a list of these devices in the order that their drivers should be installed I'd be very grateful. Unfortunately I don't have any of the discs that came with my PC. I am connected directly to my router through an ethernet cable, but in Device Manager my Modem, the Intel 537EP, is disabled. There is another Intel device listed under the Network Adapter tab, this must be the one that is connected to the router vie ethernet cable. Does this mean that I don't have to install the driver for the disabled modem? Will it be disabled by default even when I reinstall the OS or is this something I should do manually? The final thing, this PC is a Dell, a few years old now. It came with integrated graphics installed but I bought a Nvidia GeForce card and had a friend of mine install it on the system. In Device Manager both the Nvidia card and the integrated graphics are enabled and the integrateds' driver is still installed. When I reinstall the operating system should I keep the monitor plugged into the Nvidia and just forget the integrated chip is there? Will I need to install the drivers for both? Any help would be greatly appreciated, forgive my ignorance Thanks, Jay Ranger |

Re: Windows XP Clean Install - Driver Help
You can go to Dells Support Web site and download drivers for your computer and put them on a flash drive before you reinstall Windows. Download the Network Adapter, Chipsset, Audio etc. You don't need to install the onboard video driver since you are not using it. You don't need to install the driver for your dialup modem either as you are not using it, but if you ever want to fax or if you ever want to use your modem, you can download it from the Dell site as well. You will need to download the driver for your nVidea card from their site. When you reinstall Windows, Windows will load a default VGA driver, but the resolution may be off until you install the driver from the nVidia site. Once you have installed Windows, go to the Device Manager to see what devices needs to be installed, they will have a yellow mark.

Re: Windows XP Clean Install - Driver Help
and welcome to the ForumThe Intel 537EP is a telephone modem . . if you do not need one, you can leave it alone. Otherwise, use the driver from Dell The nVidia card should have disabled the onboard video in BIOS, but if it does not, you can do it manually. I would do that prior to the reinstall. Attach the monitor to the nVidia card. You can go to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number and download the drivers See this for the order they should be installed: http://support.dell.com/support/topi...=en&l=en&s=dhs You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here

Re: Windows XP Clean Install - Driver Help[MOVED]
Install the chipset driver first before any of the other drivers.

Thanks, RiskyOne, have done. Everything went well guys and my computer's running like clockwork. Put all the drivers on a flash disk, like you suggested and installed them in the correct order.
