[SOLVED] Gateway 4520GZ wireless card not appearing after XP install and drivers inst
I have a Gateway 4520GZ laptop that had XP installed and running up until recently. The wireless adapter was working fine as well. Sadly, recent "blue screen of death" issues prompted me to re-install XP from scratch.
The install went fine and one of the first things I did afterward was to visit the Manufacturer's site and support page for my model to get any missing drivers. I have downloaded and installed all the wireless related drivers on the site, but none of them seem to get my adapter (do I call this the adapter or the card?) recognized. When I go to the Network Connections area, I only see the LAN Ethernet adapter and a generic looking 1394 Connection -- No sign of the wireless in there. In my Device Manager I see the 2 network adapters mentioned above and they look fine. The only Yellow question marks I show are under "Other Devices" and they are for the Audio controller, Network Controller, and for a PCI modem. An odd little extra.. This model has an LCD light indicator near the touchpad that indicates if the Wireless is enabled or not.. I can turn the LCD on and off using the keyboard, but other than the light is seems to have no effect. Any suggestions at this point? |

XP wireless zero configuration Service turned on?
Have you tried the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Control panel?

Re: Gateway 4520GZ wireless card not appearing after XP install and drivers installed
Confirmed that the Wireless Aero Configuration Service is on.
I also noticed that in the Control Panel I have two items there now that must have appeared when I installed the driver software on the Gateway site..(my laptop model had two wireless drivers available on the product support page) I installed a Broadcom Wireless Driver and now I have an item for that in the control Panel. Clicking it I simply get the message "Incompatible driver version found". I also installed Intel PROSet for wireless driver on the Gateway site, and when I start that from the control panel the application launches, but there is nothing inside of it.. just an empty list and no actions to perform. I assume it is also not finding an appropriate adapter. Here the link to where I got this software: http://support.gateway.com/s//Mobile/Gateway/M45GZ/3727nv.shtml |

Re: Gateway 4520GZ wireless card not appearing after XP install and drivers installed
Two wireless drivers available isn't the same as needing 2 wireless drivers.
Uninstall what you installed from Add/Remove. Then identify the adapter for which you actually need drivers installed. Try Belarc or Everest - (download to flash drive and install)

Re: Gateway 4520GZ wireless card not appearing after XP install and drivers installed
Well I realized I didn't need both, but I wasn't sure which one I had in my machine. The Product specs mention that either can be optionally included.
However, I just got it resolved! I went on the Windows update site to see what optional hardware drivers might be available.. I installed the one for wireless Intel ProSet that came up and the install worked. So for anyone else that has this issue, the Intel ProSet driver on the Gateway product page did not work for me, but the similarly named one on the Windows Automatic Update site did! |

Re: Gateway 4520GZ wireless card not appearing after XP install and drivers installed
I am glad you got the solution.
I maintain that you should have identified the specific adapter you have and then sought out the necessary drivers. Sometimes the drivers even major vendors provide get skewed at their sites - letting them know is a courtesy. :)
