[SOLVED] Driver for CD-ROM drive
When I play a CD through my WMP11 I get a muffled sound, but it plays a "music file" perfectly.I'm thinking this is a driver problem for my "drive" which is ..HL-DT-ST DVD-RW_GSA-H41NATA device. In the properties box\driver detail it lists it as "c:\windows\system32\cdrom.sys".It did function properly and I have not knowing made any changes.

Re: Driver for CD-ROM drive
Rich sorry I didn't make that clear. What I was referring to is music files I have on my hard drive.I also ripped a song from the same CD and it to played fine on my WMP 11.I listed this information so as to eliminate the source of he problem being with WMP.Thanks for pointing out that the only driver for the CD-ROM is provided by Windows.I don't believe I mentioned that i uninstalled that driver and reinstalled but that did not correct it.I wish I could shed more light on the problem but I have went as far as I can go.

Re: Driver for CD-ROM drive
If it plays music from the hard drive, but not from the CD drive, I would suspect the drive is dirty or failing. You could try a CD Drive cleaner to see if that makes it better

Re: Driver for CD-ROM drive
In Device Manager right click on your CD drive and left click properties and ensure that 'enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device' is checked and that the volume is maxed.

Re: Driver for CD-ROM drive
I checked in "device mgr." as you directed but did not see the listed items in the "properties dialog box".Under the "general tab" it listed "device status" and reads "this device is working properly" .I also did the drive clean as suggested in previous reply with no change in the sound quality.Seems there is some little setting that is escaping us.I have also checked the IDE channel to assure that "enable DMA" is "checked".Thanks for your input.

Re: Driver for CD-ROM drive
I should mention that for my CD/DVD I right click the device, then left click properties (which gives me 6 sub-window options), then left click properties again.

Re: Driver for CD-ROM drive
Thx. guys for prompting me to keep digging, and finally I stumbled across the cause which was as simple as the WMP equalizer. The "custom setting" I was using had a different effect when I was playing straight from the CD as opposed to playing a "music file" from the HD.
