OS: I Have several Computers

Okay. I am a very casual computer user. I got a computer from some guy I know. I wiped the hard drive (at least as much as I could with the free trial). I installed Windows XP profesional edition. Oh yeah, the computer is a Compaq EVO D5? or at least that is what I was told.
So, I start it up, get the internet running, and start installing some recomended drivers from the Compaq Site. However the compaq site sent me to D500... I don't know if that is the same or not. I'm good for Audio. But that is all I know. What do I need? What should I have? I would like somthing so I can change the resolution from 4bit to at least 16bit. Also everything is a bit.. big and I don't recall how I changed that on my other Computer. Also I tried to intall the normal windows update thing, and it said I had to update the updater or somthing. Fine, So I did that. Now its downloading a bunch of missed updates. Any ideas? |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Well first what do you we "I wiped the hard driver (at least as much as I could with the free trial)" when you wipe a hard drive it means your formated fully and you could do thats using the Windows XP cd. As for the drivers heres a link http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...&lang=en&cc=us
if the computer in the picture is what you have then download the video and graphics drivers and install them.

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Right, I went here and downloaded some things (an audio and some other type driver)... But with the graphics drivers, 3 of those require me to write somthing to a floppy, and the other two don't seem to do anything.
I don't think the chipset one did anything... I don't think the display one did anything. Also I see nothing clearly labled as Video driver. I'm sorry if I seem slow or stupid at this, I'm still learning a lot of this. And for the whole free trial dealie... There is a prgram called wipe drive. I don't know the specifics, but it wipes out the operating system, any installed files, and I guess a lot of the drivers. I don't have an Official XP disc. But it works jus like one. Has a verification key and everything.: That is all I know. Also, that is the computer in the picture, or at least it looks similar. I can't tell cause of the stupid 4 bit only display. I just want 16bit or higher. Is that so wrong? Last edited by Dhiz; 09-05-2009 at 12:20 AM. |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Try downloading these two drives (if you haven't before)
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...G_I11125-32349 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...G_I10867-31891 I looked at all the graphics drivers they give to download and the first three are Nvidia BIOS update, thats why they asked you to put something on floppy, I think one of these two should work. Post back with update.

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
You can also go into Device Manager and anything with a yellow question mark or exclamation point means you need that driver.
Install the drivers intelfan provided, then reboot your PC, then go into Device Manager and tell us what ones have a yellow mark by them. -Coolfreak |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Downloading as I type. How do I get to the Device Manager? Am I able to get to it from the start menu? or do I have to type it in to the command box?

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Yellow question marks are on the following:
Ethernet Controller Video Controller (VGA Compatible) I still cant change any resolution type things And the screen is still zoomed in WAY to far, which probobly has somthing to do with that. Those two drivers you said to install don't SEEM to do anything. But who knows, maybe thet did. |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Try this driver for your display issues.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...tem=pv-45394-1 Download and run Everest and post a report of it. A link is available in my signature. This should help us find the exact drivers you need. |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Problems with both...
The Driver. I downloaded it, and Almost installed it. It got to %100 instalation when an error message poped up. somthing along these lines. ----------------------------------------- SEVERE ----------------------------------------- _____ |red X| |here | """""""""' A software error ocurred. Please report this to technical support:Cannot install Intel(R) graphics driver on current graphics device. Does this mean I have to buy a new graphics card? (I hope not) And for the website... It is very difficult to navigate. I will try again to find the download, but a lot of the text blends with the background. |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
"Have you gone into device manager?"
Yes. And there are yellow question marks on the big catagory of "other devices" and sub-catagorys "Ethernet Controller" and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". Everything else SEEMS to be okay. But I may be wrong. Also to cool freak I officially can not find the EVEREST program. I see lots of good reviews for it but no button that clearly says "DOWNLOAD HERE YOU FOOL" Last edited by Dhiz; 09-05-2009 at 09:27 PM. Reason: Addition |

"The driver I posted was not one of the two that intelfan posted.."
Well I had A similar experiance with one of them. Everest is downloaded. I ran a report using the report wizard. I selected all pages to be sure. What information do I need to find in the report? Tried Posting the entire report. Too many Words. if there is a particular section you want to see, you will have to let me know. Last edited by Dhiz; 09-05-2009 at 09:45 PM. |

Re: What Drivers and WHERE
Try this driver for your display issues. You will need to accept the Terms and Agreements first.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8Cl...onal*&lang=eng Try this for your Ethernet Controller. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...kId=135&mode=3 |
