2 optical drives not working on fresh XP install..Wrong IDE drivers?
Fresh install of XP SP3 on a Sony Vaio Desktop
Model # on back says PCV-2222 but sony's website doesn't acknowledge its existence Found this post that claims it is a PCV-RS315 http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/5...esolution.html Downloaded all pertinent drivers from Sony's driver section for the RS315 including BIOS & Chipset (neither drive matches the default drive listed there so they must be aftermarket) Still lists "!" next to both the ASUS drive and Matshita drive Flashed Matshita drive with correct FW (had to boot from real DOS just to do this lol) Tried to flash the ASUS drive and it says I don't have any ASUS drives even though Device Manager lists the exact model # of the driver I obtained and... *drumroll* Still lists "!" next to both the ASUS drive and Matshita drive so basically somehow I got 2 bricks instead of optical drives now... going to just suggest that my client buy a new one since you can grab them for $20 now and I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to get them working already. However this was frustrating as **** so if anyone knows how to fix this in the future I'd love to know. Thanks.

Re: 2 optical drives not working on fresh XP install..Wrong IDE drivers?
can you see them both listed in the bios correctly
check the jumpers are set correctly on the back of the drives that you are using the 80 wire ide cable with the blue grey and black plugs the one on the black plug set to master and the other on the grey plug as slave uninstall from the device manager and reboot

Re: 2 optical drives not working on fresh XP install..Wrong IDE drivers?
I tried everything you suggested except for checking the cable/jumpers. I assumed that if everything showed in the BIOS correctly the cable and jumpers must be fine?
Also they presumably worked fine back before his OS crashed and the cable/jumpers wouldn't have changed since then other than a catastrophic cable issue which would mean no detection in BIOS yea? In addition to your suggestions I also uninstalled the IDE controller & IDE chains and reinstalled the Chipset driver a few times. Oh and I also tried using just 1 drive. It was set as Slave by itself and miraculously was detected in BIOS and will run a Boot CD just fine... must be some driver issue in Windows I'm thinking. Is there a registry key I can check? All I found was local_machine - hardware - devicemap - SCSI - and a few things that I was afraid to touch =\

Re: 2 optical drives not working on fresh XP install..Wrong IDE drivers?
check if the other drive works on it's own
if not it may be faulty and causing the problem when both are connected try another ide cable the current one may have a broken wire in it

Re: 2 optical drives not working on fresh XP install..Wrong IDE drivers?
have you removed both from the device manager and rebooted and checked they are still listed

Re: 2 optical drives not working on fresh XP install..Wrong IDE drivers?
Yes when I deleted the drives they stayed gone until next reboot. It would not let me completely remove the IDE controller or primary IDE chain (one with the harddrive, opticals are on secondary). It said "must restart to take effect" then it comes back automatically.
They worked fine during installation of windows... then not in windows. Kind of ironic isn't it?
