Well I would guess you sound card or addapter is faulty cause windows cannot detect it, you can look around for the right drivers or contact the company for tech support. But I think compaq is now HP, if all else fails buy a new sound card. they have usb sound devices and card slot addapters that would work.

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

Go here for drive sweeper:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D--...er)_d1672.html

Go here for the chipset driver unless you already installed it:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...lName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng

Go here for the audio driver: (3rd one down)
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

1. uninstall the audio driver through add/remove
2. remove audio folder from C:drive / program files folder
3. run drive sweeper and remove any traces of conextant audio files
4. reboot pc
5. upon boot up if a new found hardware box appears, cancel it out.
6. install audio driver
7. reboot pc
