sound driver

Why has my sound driver that I downloaded several mths ago stopped working? I still have sound for media player but not for chat in yahoo messenger or inspeak. I have VISTA and was told at the time of the download that I could only download just once, so I am worried about uninstalling it and not be able to get another one.

What is the make and model of the computer?
Do you have sound when playing a CD/DVD?
