Hi All
I have a clean install XP Pro 2002 service pack 3, pentium 4. In device manager under Ports (Com & LPT) I have "ECP Printer port (LPT 1) and thats it. I need some "Com ports" cannot find them, and have "Googled" and can find ....well not a lot. Everything else is in Device manager, I just need com ports. I would point out that I do not "Know" this computer, it came to me broken and I am trying to fix it. Any help please. Cheers Bill |

Re: Com ports are no more
Thanks for the welcome.
HP Pavilion is the make, yes I did update windows, and I went to Microsoft and downloaded the "Fix" in case security was a problem (AVG Free), and yes I have updated drivers until I cannot find anymore to update. Having said that may be, just may be I have missed something, but that is the million dollar question. Thank for your help. Bill |

Re: Com ports are no more[MOVED]
Hi,
HP list several a1000 models. http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Looku...=A1000&x=3&y=1 Look for the service tag on the tower and post the EXACT model. Also post ALL the errors you have in the Device Manager (yellow?! or red X). Thanks, Bill |

Perhaps it will remain as one of lifes mysteries!! Bill |

Re: Com ports are no more[MOVED]
Hi,
According to the specs of this computer you do not have a serial port (Com Port), so you will not "see" com1,com2 in the Device Manager. Specs of your motherboard: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...162702&lang=en and http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...162702&lang=en What are you trying to connect via a Com Port (Serial port)? |

Re: Com ports are no more[MOVED]
Ah, that would be why then, thanks.
What do I want to connect? Well my friend and I live in RURAL Spain, and are not able to have a telephone line as we are far from the town. Now I can get “Radio broadband internet” he – because he lives in a dip in the countryside- cannot get it, but he can get dialup on a radio phone ( the Ericsson G36) and you can get a much faster connection if you use the modem that is IN the phone, now it seems to do that you have to have a GPRS/EDGE connection, which I am told by the manufacturer means that you have to install another “Standard modem” not actually put in a modem but install is as a dialup vehicle, after you have disabled your installed modem. And that will enable you to use the modem that is in the phone bypassing the modem in your computer. Now I have managed to install it on one computer doing the above.....but they have Com ports to enable me to install modem. I would point out that once you have installed the “Invisible” modem on the computer, you make the connection through a USB cable connected direct to the phone. Hopefully I haven’t waffled on too much, or indeed confused the situation, and with a bit of luck, somebody will tell me a really quick and easy way to solve the problem, as the fastest connection speed on dialup in rural Spain is about 28 kbs. Cheers Bill |

Re: Com ports are no more[MOVED]
HI,
I am not familiar with this setup, but you could always add a PCI to Serial Port Card. An example here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815166004 More can be found if you google PCI to Serial Port Card. Hope this helps. Bill |
