Usb fault

my computer is not responding to any external device via usb. i am on xp and have plug and play however when i plug any device in the system does not respond, nor do devices show in my computer. when troubleshooting, system tells me driver is working properly, obviously not..
please can somebody help? thank you

You need xp sp2 in order to run usb2.0 devices. Do you have any
red or yellow flags in device manager? Have usb devices ever worked
on that machine.
