Connecting an old XP to the internet (good luck)
(my old comp is screwed up in an epic way)
hey guys, i bought an old xp from a used computer store a little while ago, and i cant get it to connect to the internet due to compounding hardware and software problems. the computer is a windows xp home edition, version 2002, service pack 3, AMD athlon processor 1.28 ghz, 768mb RAM. it's sitting right next to my other working computer (i'm using now) it's a vista with 4 gigs of ram. anyways, the dreaded error code 10 is all over my devices on the broken PC, ALL of my internet connection possibilities dont work at all because apparently there are no drivers for pretty much everything. i need to connect to update, but i cant connect until i update first, on top of that, the disk drives wont work or install, neither will the USB drives. THE ONLY DRIVE THAT WORKS ON IT IS THE "FLOPPY A" DRIVE, and my working computer doesnt have one of those, and i have none of those in my house anyways. i've called tech support and spent my whole day trying to fix it, but it's such a major screwed up problem not even tech support can help me. but i really want this computer to work, where can i start to get the computer connected to the net? |

Re: Connecting an old XP to the internet (good luck)
i'd like to reinstall the OS, but the only drive that works is the floppy one. i guess the first step is getting a working drive.

Re: Connecting an old XP to the internet (good luck)
Hello and Welcome to TSF,
make and model of pc? I will give you the link or links for the drivers to burn them to a cd will need to reinstall xp windows Note: open the side panel of the pc and make sure everything is connected up (Power cables and IDE ribbons) Go into bios and check that the devices are properly showing: hard drive, cd rom, floppy drive...ect. Is the cd rom showing up under "my computer"? please try to answer these questions as accurately as you can, as this will help me to you better.

Re: Connecting an old XP to the internet (good luck)
i don't think that there is a make and model... (pretty sure it was custom assembled by the store owner) the case is blank. i can tell you that it has an "allied al-a250atx" power supply, and a red motherboard known as "ms 6712" i got another cd rom drive i can try to install...

Re: Connecting an old XP to the internet (good luck)
Looks like it may be this MSI board(KT4AV-L) > http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=do...=1&prod_no=505
However there are OEM versions used by Fujitsu and a few other obscure manufacturers which most likely would use the standard MSI drivers. |
