[SOLVED] intalled new drive - drive not found
Dell XPS 400 - I have installed a new cd drive because it would not read OS disk to try to repair my system after getting blue screen messages. I also installed (replaced) my #2 HD after it crashed months ago and was using HD #1 and have saved everything (except actual programs which I don't know how to do) on external drive. Needless to say, I have to use the cd to install the drive, and it trys but it doesnt. Message error indicates drive 4 and drive 5 not found. I unplugged both upon reinstallation of the new one, now of course neither work. Of course I have to get this working prior to installing OS onto the new harddrive. I can't find any answers, says to change BIOS, well who knows if I did or not or even correct or if that is necessary. I'm trying to do this myself, ha... and if I installed them buggers, then I know I can reset the computer to work.... not giving up! I need to learn this!! Help....

Re: intalled new drive - drive not found
You have 2 ide channels on that board correct? From what little Ive read
there is no sata. If you have 2 hdds they need to be on the same ide cable, primary ide. If you have optical drives they need to be put on the secondary channel. Not a good idea to put a hdd on the same cable as the cdrom drive. If you have 2 hdds on the primary channel one needs to be a master and one a slave. Look at the back of the drives to configure the proper jumper setting. The same goes for the cdrom/dvd drives.

Re: intalled new drive - drive not found
I have two issuses, justs installed the CD Drive and HD. I installed the same way they came out, so I can't answer the cable question and didn't install any other way, was extremely careful. Jumper setting, that is what I can't find. I'll have to take the drive out, I read something about the jumper setting, but looked on drive and could not find it. I'm so lost. Something I thought would be easy and I could do it, has become a chore, but I can still do it if everyone has patience with me... thanks so much....

Re: intalled new drive - drive not found
While your in there just check and make sure its setup how I described.
Just because thats the way it was does not mean that it was right. It will run if the cdrom drive is on the same cable as the hdd, but you will have a big performance hit. The hdd can only run as fast as the slowest thing on the chain, which means ata33 speed, because that is as fast as the cdrom drive can work. If you look at the back of the drives you should see a diagram of where master slave and cable select are, could even be a configuration for single without slave, or master with slave. Make sure the #1 pin on the ide cable is pointed toward the red lead of the power molex, if you have the cable backwards that will be a problem, sometimes the cable will be keyed but not always.

Re: intalled new drive - drive not found
I did what you suggested. I was able to locate the jumper pin on the back of the CD Drive (which before I was looking on the HD, so I was a bit confused). Couldn't follow the cable issue though... However once I changed the jumper pin it was finally able to recognize the drive and able to get to "Safe Mode" screen, but still would not allow me to access in SM, more blue screen errors. So, I gave the computer to a friend who knows a heck of a lot more than me to assist me. I was pretty proud of myself for getting as far as I did, but am finding it is much more complicated. I just wanted to thank you for your assistance and I'm sure I'll be back in this forum again.. great tool.. thanks again.
