no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
I have an hp pavilion a6400f running Windows Vista. I have no sound, with a red x next to speaker icon in lower right. In device mgr. there is a yellow exclamation point next to my Realtek High Definition Audio. In properties it says device cannot start error 10. I have tried downloading the latest recommended driver from Realtek (Vista_R221) but it always times out (I have a good internet connection, so that doesn't make sense to me). I have tried updating driver from device manager, but that hasn't seemed to fix the error. I have clicked check for solutions in driver properties, but that doesn't help. There are also no playback devices to choose from on speaker icon or in the control panel under 'sound'. Have unplugged speakers (which used to work last week) and plugged back in. Vista doesn't recognize them I guess. I've been through troubleshoot tips for Vista on Microsoft website and have had no luck. I have no idea where to go from here, and am so ready to give up.

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
Solution: 1: Download sound driver from http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ID=2093#113165
2:uninstall sound driver from device manager. 2: Restart the computer and then reinstall sound driver again. |

Hi Thror, Here's the link to the site for 2.21, http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/...&GetDown=false
When you get to that page put a check mark in the box and click next. Then select Realtek High Definition Codecs. It will take you to a page that looks like this, realtek.jpg select the .exe circled AND click the Express button-On the page that opens enter the password they give you here. Express.jpg Forget the bottom half of the page. Click Download. If you have dial up you can use a download manager as the express link will allow resume. Its a 33mb file. Here's a link on the quirky install. http://www.vistax64.com/sound-audio/...r-version.html This won't time out on you. Good Luck and post back |

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
I used the Realtek link and clicked express button for download of the executable R221 driver, but it timed out at 53%. I have DSL so I don't understand why it takes so long for the thing to download in the first place (4+ hours!). What could be the problem? Are there any other options?
thanks. |

I am not sure if this will help but try a download manager like Flashget.

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
3 minutes max on dsl, do you have trouble on downloading anything else? Are you wifi? Firefox? Can you use IE7? Do you have java and is it updated? You are trying to "save the Program to Desktop" and not "Run" from the site? What kind of antivirus program are you running Norton, McAfee?
Try these links and see if they also time out. http://www.driversdown.com/drivers/R...4)_88205.shtml http://majorgeeks.com/download5513.html post back and let us know |

I do not have trouble downloading anything else. I'm not wifi or firefox. I'm saving the program to desktop. I have Norton, and everything is updated. My audio driver just does not show up in device manager. I'm downloading from zappaboss's 1st link right now, and it says it will take over an hour. I'll post back once it's finished.

oh and I just recently reverted my pc back to its original factory settings, hoping that might give me the option for sound, video, and game controllers in device mgr. back, but it didn't. I've updated everything since reverting.

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
I was able to download from majorgeeks.com. after running the installation wizard I restarted, but upon restart I still could not locate driver in device mgr. I scanned for hardware changes (which evidently were not detected by my pc on restart) and nothing came up. I went to action and clicked on add legacy hardware. I followed the windows to my realtek driver and got the "sound, video and game controller option in device mgr. but realtek driver has yellow exclamation point. It says it's not working properly. Error 10. Device could not start. I want to throw my computer through the window.

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
After you restarted did you run the install again? Usually the "first" install will remove the old driver..then on reboot you run the .exe file again and this will do the "real" install of the file. Let us know the outcome.
Do this Thror, Click "Start" and "Run"....type msinfo32 and click 'OK" This is your System Information file. Click the + sign next to "Components" then click "Sound Device" There you should see your Realtek High Definition Audio and looking down to driver at the bottom, you should see your new updated (check date at right) driver-the date is the date of the driver you installed. Also you can drag the "Value" field at the top of the page, so you can read the whole line. While you have the "Components" expanded..click on "problem Devices" see anything there? Lets get the sound working first and then possibly start a new thread...."download connections time out?" |

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
Hi Thror, The error code 10 huh? Lets attack with some basics.
Click.."Start"...Click "Run" and type services.msc into the box and click "OK" UAC may prompt..click continue. These are the Services that can be used in Vista. At the bottom of the page you will see Extended/Standard Please click the Extended Tab. Now scroll down the list and find "Windows Audio" and look at the "Status" and "Start Up Type". The Status should read "Started" and Start Up should read "Automatic". If not Right click on it and select "properties" There you will see that you can set the Start Up Type-dropdown menu to Automatic and can manually click start. Hopefully thats how you have found it set. Next, please get some info: Click on "Start"..."run" and type msinfo32 into the box and click "OK" This is your system information file. Click on the "File" button on the menu bar and click "Save AS" a window opens...the Save As Type should be .nfo Save the file to your desktop. On the desktop, find the file called msinfo32.nfo and Right Click on it..scroll down to "Send To" and select Compressed (zipped) Folder. You will now see a .zip file named msinfo32.zip Attach it to your next post on TSF. Click "Start"..."Run" and type dxdiag into the box and click "OK" This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. This is where you can check your Display and Sound adapters. Click on the "Save All Information" and it will open a window.. Save As Type should be .txt file. Save this file to your desktop. Attach it to your next post on TSF. I checked out your HP Pavilion a6400f online specs and it's an impressive machine. Looks pretty new. I am curious as to when sound quit on your machine. Had you installed any new programs before it quit? Was machine always Vista or Upgraded from XP? Can you determine the model of Realtek as 880/860? This will be in msinfo32.....I'll see in your attachments anyways. This code 10 jazz has plagued many people and seems to have somthing to do with Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. Some homework http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Microsoft+UAA+Bus+Driver+HD+Audio%2BVista+code+10&btnG=Search

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
Be nice if you could get R2.21 directly from Realtek as I've heard there's a patch built into it for the MS UAA Bus. Any chance of grabbing the d/l from Realtek on another computer? Just a thought.

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
Yeah my pc's not that old. I got it last summer I think. The sound quit after I tried to install a new graphics card about 2-3 weeks ago. Turns out the card may not have been compatible with Vista, which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I thought system requirements usually meant 'minimum' system requirements. Anyways, the sound wouldn't work after I put that card in, so I put the old one back in but the audio continued to give me problems. I could try downloading R2.21 on my older pc today after work, but I'm not sure if the disc burners work on it anymore. I'll follow your previous instructions and post back later tonight. Thanks a ton.

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
Hi again Thror, Hold off on that Realtek download for now.
I see the high definition audio controller still exists here: Name: High Definition Audio Controller Device ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_2A6F103C&REV_02\3&11583659&0&D8 Driver: C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\hdaudbus.sys, 6.00.6001.17036 (English), 1/20/2008 21:23:22, 53760 bytes This is a good sign BUT from dxdiag log I see 2 instances of Realtek Driver. sys.info sound.jpg Go to your "Control Panel" and click "Device Manager" I need you to check you device manager and verify you also see listings for these 2 devices. Here is a screenshot: device manager sysdev.jpg Write down what you see there and post back to me. I have a link from HP but need to know what you see in those 2 areas. I am just trying to verify what I see in msinfo32 and dxdiag compared to what I believe you cannot see. Giving up is Not an option. |

Re: no audio. been to many tech sites/support forums. so far no luck.
I did see two instances of the realtek driver-both had exclamation points by them. I uninstalled the one from April. here's the new attachments-should be about the same as the last but you understand this better than me: msinfo32 (2).zip
DxDiag.txt I do not see the option for the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio under System Devices though. Could it be titled something else? |
