hi folks :),
if anyone can help me out with this item I'd greatly appreciate it. in the 'Device Manager/Other devices' listing I have 8 yellow marks that I am unable to resolve or remedy; each time I boot my pc I have to cycle through the 'Found New Hardware dialogue process' and its now becoming tedious ![]() this post is my 'earnest' attempt to better understand this particular aspect of the inner workings of a pc and so be able to remedy, or avoid, such issues in the future. I understand that this issue concerns the matter of device drivers and their 'serviceability' but from there on I'm in rather unfamiliar territory ![]() the Device Manager listing reads as shown in the attachment. BACKGROUND INFO 1 - for each item I've tried the right-click option 'Uninstall' but the system just automatically re-populates the listing again with the same entries. 2 - I've tried using a driver scan & update app (kinda running in auto mode hoping it would 'magically' cure the issue) but without success. 3 - during boot-up I've tried to gain 'Safe Mode' access, via the Recovery Console' but without success, the RC seemed to be unavailable so . . . 4 - I've tried the Repair OS (Windows XP) option on the install CD (no, it's NOT a backup cd) but without success so then . . . 5 - I've tried an OS re/install via the install CD (to overwrite the installed OS files and hopefully install the RC but without success). 6 - the pc is a multi-boot system and the F8 key is used to select the required drive from which to boot (F8 - the same key that is needed to access the Recovery Console during system boot) 7 - the pc is a 'self build' some ?3? years old and is based on an Asus 939 socket A8N-SLI and AMD 64 X2 4800 cpu combo with 2 gig of 'regular' memory. 8 - I'm running Avast! for virus protection, RegCure for registry housekeeping, and Diskeeper Pro for system defrag. your questions, thoughts and suggestions all greatly appreciated with thanks. best regards, yoyojoe :)

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
Kodi is right on.
If you don't have the cd, and since it appears that your network adapters are installed, you may can click on the devices and then click update, and let windows try to installed the drivers automatically. It may be that there are certified drivers from MS that will be installed. If those two means don't work, go to your MB mfr site and find your MB and get the drivers from there. Download them, then run the installations. . |

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
Once you get the drivers, either from the Motherboard CD or downloading them from Asus, Load the chipset driver first . . then the others in any order

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
thank you for your posts, they have helped me a little. IF you're able to throw any light on the following I can let you know how it works out for me.
as I'm unable to locate my mobo drivers cd I've d/l'd some (there are a total of 53 but some seem to be 'earlier' versions) drivers for my Asus mobo from their website. from within Device Manager and using the option 'Update Driver' I've managed to resolve one yellow question mark but I have 7 remaining. fyi - I selected a yqm and used the option Update Driver on each d/l'd file in turn until either the driver was updated or I ran out of d/l files to try as an update source. I've disabled 2 x 'Unknown device' and 1 x 'RAID Controller' but I'm unsure how to remedy the PCI Bridge, PCI Memeory, SM Bus, and USB Device items - any thoughts or suggestion greatly appreciated. regards. yoyojoe

The Yellow ? for PCI Bridge, PCI Memeory, SM Bus, and USB Device items indicate you have not installed the chipset driver. Download it and double click on it to install.

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
sweet, thank you Rich,
I'm now just over half way to getting this sorted. It had failed to register with me that the nvidia driverset was NOT for the graphics capability of the mobo. following your post I have now remedied the PCI Bridge, PCI Memeory, SM Bus items - thank you for that. I remain with 2 x Unknown device, 1 x USB Device, and 1 x RAID Controller that are currently disabled; any suggestions how they may be remedied please? from trawling through the nVidia site I see that there are raid two drivers used by this mobo, an ide and a sata type, and that one of them is known to have caused issues with the XP o/s so I'm comfortable with leaving that disabled for now.

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
What Model is the motherboard?
If you are not using RAID you do not need those drivers, Do you have a flash card reader attached?

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
the card reader seems to be working fine.
I've just inserted a flash card and the files show as expected.

Re: yellow question marks - don't know what I'm doing
HI,
Can you go to the Device Manager. Post the remaining errors you have. Also on these errors can you Right Click on the error>Properties>Details Tab. Post the info you find under Device instance ID. Thanks, Bill |
