[SOLVED] USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

Hi

I have an Emachines 410 and none of the 6 usb sockets are working. When I plug something into them, the pc doesn't detect anything connected, but there is power going to the device.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the device manager.

I have tried forcing them through by adding new hardware.

I have checked the BIOS set to ensure that the Plau and Play is enabled.

The USB's appear on the device manager tree, as working fine.

I have tried a fresh instal, using my recovery disks, and have reinstalled the operating system and motherboard drivers.

The motherboard is a Trigem Imperial Generic.

I'm out of ideas....Idon't know what else to try

Would be really grateful for any help

Thanks

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

HI,
Is this the Original Motherboard (Trigem Imperial Generic) as most e410 came with a Asrock P4i65G.
If you can can you supply the exact model number of this board.

What SP pack is installed (SP1, SP2, SP3).
Bill

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

Hi Bill

Cheers for the reply.

Yes, the is the original motherboard that came with the PC. And it's running XP Home with Service Pack 3.

It is really difficult getting an exact model number of the mother board, as when i try a bit of software to identify what make the motherboard is, the ino back is very brief or unknown.

But, I know that the motherboard is a Trigem Imperial Generic. The number that appears in one of the bits of software I have used was;

31861.EM.0000.D.0306251039

Let me know if you need anything else to help

Thanks again

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

HI,
Can you open the tower (Computer turned OFF) and see if there are any specs, numbers anything? on the board itself.
The make and model is usually located in between the PCI slots or the CPU.

If that fails can you run Everest under my signature and attach the report to the thread.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

HI,
Sorry for the delay,

I concerned with what I saw in the report you post

You PSU voltages are VERY LOW, From the report:
Voltage Values:
+1.5 V 0.04 V (should be above 1.5V)
+12 V 3.06 V (should be above 12V)
This could be from EVEREST reporting it incorrectly.

I have also noticed you appear to have 2 seperate Graphics card:
FIC Radeon 9200
&
Intel Extreme Graphics which is disabled.

Do you have an option in the BIOS that will detect the voltages of your PSU?
If not, run PC Wizard under my signature and see what your Voltages are.
This will give us some sort of comparison.

Is this the original PSU in this computer?

As far has the USB ports:
These drivers normally come from Microsoft.
From you report they are installed correctly (No Errors).
Does any USB adapter detected by windows?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill

i have tried different usb devices (Card reader, printer, digital camera) in all of the USB plugs, but nothing gets detected.

Thanks again

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

Hi Bill

OK, have run PC Wizard, and under the Voltage, Temp and Fans, it shows the +12v Voltage as 3.06v

In the BIOS under POWER, it asks just one question;

After AC Power failure...

and the options are; Stay off, auto and Power on. mine is currently set to Stay off. I'm assuming that this isn't right?

Hope this helps Bill

thanks again

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

I changed the Power settings to Turn On and rebooted the system. One of the 6 USB ports kind of worked. When I plugged a device in, it kept flashing up, in the bottom right hand corner of screen, that the device wasn't working and had malfunctioned. it would continually flash up every few seconds.

When I selected Auto on the power settings and tried the USB ports again, exactly the same response as above.

I have rerun the everest report (see attached), but this has been run with the Power settings on the BIOS set to Auto. the first report I ran was with the settings on Turn Off.

thanks

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

HI,
I do not know if this will fix your USB issue, but your Power Supply is an issue.
Both reports are showing +3.06 on the +12V line.

The USB ports are attemting to work as you stated the report shows this:
Quote:
USB Device Unknown Device
I believe you will have to replace the PSU, before we can go any farther.

Reset the BIOS to STAY OFF after AC Power Failure

Bill

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

OK, thanks Bill

Will obtain a new PSU, fit it, and reset the Bios as you state.

Will then post back and tell what change there is.

thanks again.

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

Hi,
While you are in there I would also take a close look at the Motherboard!

E-Machines are known for Very Low quality PSU's that can do damage to other components.
Take a close look at the tops of the Motherboards copacitors and look for signs of leaks.
These copacitors should not be bulging and should not have a powdery substance on the tops of them. Most of these copacitors are located around the CPU, but maybe throughout the Motherboard.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

Hi Bill

sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but have just sorted out my PC.

I purchased a PSU, same specs as the one that was in my current base unit...and the same problem. No detection of the USB ports and the output on the report was the same.

on closer inspection of the motherboard, there was indeed damage to some of the components you mention above.

I purchased an 3210 eMachines (for £30 off Ebay) and have transferred everything across to this motherboard and everything is working sweet. At last, have 6 working usb ports again. Everything is working great, have downloaded all the new drivers etc for this new motherboard.

Thanks massively for all your help in solving this problem.

Cheers again

Re: USB Not detecting Device - at my wits end

HI,
I am Glad to hear you are up and running again!

I am sorry to hear you had to pay for the extra PSU and still had the same results.

But, I do hope you are using the "new" PSU to prevent this from happening again!

Thanks,
Bill
