USB 4 Way HUB
Hi
I have just plugged in a new USB 4 Way Hub and it's dead it isn't conneting my external hard drive nor my external disc burner. I am a bit of a novice but learning all the time, I believe I may need correct drivers to get this hub to work does anyone know where I can get them if they are required? Is there a freeware program available? If someone could help out and explain I would greatly appreciate it. I am running Windows XP home edition SP3 Thanks

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
I can not fully understand your problem as I can not test yours myself. I am using a fourway port which appears to work fine. The question I propose to ask is, is yours dead or alive. If your port usally works therefore you know 100% that your computor port is not the problem. Your "Fourway may be broken". If you have a memory stick or some other device with a visable indicator of function (simply: My memory sticks has a light which flashes on and off when in use) insert that into the "Fourway" and plug it in. If the device works in the computor port but not in the "Fourway" that indicates the problem is the "Fourway". Perserver for a minute or two (No more) and repetedly insert the "Fourway" in and out-just incase the connection is age related, and just simply needs a better contact. My computor always tells me if I insert any USB device in it. Apart from that I can only suggest you plug it in and ask the computor to search for new hardware. (Use the add new hardware wizard. Bye, Good luck!

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
Hi Thank for your interest in my thread
. Yes it is a self powered 2.0 4 port hub I have managed to get it working but I am getting a message from windows informing me that my mass storage device (external hard drive) will run slower because it is not connected to a high speed port ie my usb connection at the back of my PC. I have found the speed just a touch slower, which isn't a problem but what is a problem is when I try to use McAfee shredder to shred big folders of private information the speed is so slow what usually takes 5 minutes has taken hours it is a pain in the a***. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this so I can rectify the problem if it is possible to do so. The connection was age related like mike said it needed some tinkering to get it going. Thanks Last edited by technophobe1; 01-31-2009 at 01:48 PM. |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
HI,
It sounds to me that you have connected a 2.0 hub (High Speed) to a 1.0 USB (Lower Speed) port. The 2.0 hub will downgrade to 1.0 USB port, but a USB 1.0 port will not upgrade to a USB 2.0 hub. You may need to upgrade your computer to a USB PCI 2.0 card, but I am not if you have a Laptop or a PC. Please specify either Laptop or PC. I can then find some options for you. Thanks, Bill Last edited by BCCOMP; 01-31-2009 at 03:41 PM. |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
Hi
I have a PC not a lap top. The only way I can shredd the confidential files is when I plug the external hard drive straight in to the port at the back of my PC. It is a nuisance because the only thing that the 2.0 Hub has affected is the shredding process by slowing it down to a snails pace. I don't know where to access the information on my pc to find the usb port sizes. Thanks |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
It would be listed in the DEVICE MANAGER under USB.
If you do not see Enhanced USB or USB 2.0 (or similar), chances are they are 1.0 ports. Another indicator is to connect you external HD directly to the USB port (without the hub) and see if you get the usb message that it will run faster if connected to a usb 2.0 port. If this is a PC you can upgrade to a USB 2.0 by installing something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...n=usb+pci+card Then you will have additional USB 2.0 connections. Hope this helps. Bill |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
I have disconnected the 2.0 hub. When I plug the external hard drive straight in to the usb port on my computer there isn't any problem with the mcafee shredding. It only goes at a snails pace when I plug the 2.0 hub into my usb port on my computer and then plug in the external hard drive to the usb port, if I were to reinstall the 2.0 hub now I would then get the message from windows telling me that my mass storage device needs to be connected to a high speed port and a list of available ports, it will work okay except when I try to shredd. I can't connect anything else at the moment because I need to use the shredder regularly so it is a massive nuisance.
How are the card devices installed? Thanks |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
Hi,
Can you post the EXACT make an model of this HUB. It sound to me this HUB has issues. You only get the error when the HUB is connected? The USB Cards simply connects to an available PCI slot on the Moherboard (like installing any PCI Add-on card ex. Video, Sound) |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
Yes I only get the error when the external hard drive is connected to the hub. If I ignore the error the hard drive functions normally perhaps a second or two slower but the real pain is when I want to use Mcafee shredder it takes forever.
The hub is made by a company called Advent it is a 4 port multicolor glow hub ADE-4GL1 or ADE-4GL7 it says high power devices need only their own power supply. Thanks |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
I would replace this 2.0 Hub with another type or install one of the USB PCI cards I posted in (#7).
It appears to me even though this is a self powered hub, it cannot handle your external Harddrive. Bill |

Re: USB 4 Way HUB
Okay Let's see what happens, I have just ordered another hub. It is a seven port 2.0 high speed hub that is 1.1 compatible as well. I hope it does the trick I'll report the outcome back here. I don't want to have to attempt to take my PC apart I am not confident enough to know what I am doing if I have to install a card
Thanks |
