[SOLVED] Getting modem drivers to work
Hi,
I'm trying to hook up my laptop to my cable modem via USB but unfortunately my cable provider did not provide me with any when they set up my connection (for my desktop). My ethernet port on my laptop is fried so I have no choice but to use the USB or spend money on a wireless card which i don't want to do right now (student). My MSDN install of XP Pro is telling me i have 3 weeks left to register the OS or i won't be able to use it anymore. I searched online for the modem's drivers and came across some zipped packages containing three files - a .sys file, a .inf file and a .cat file, and i have no clue what to do with these files. How am I supposed to apply them to my system to talk to the modem? I tried sticking them in the C: directory and restarting the laptop with the USB cable still plugged in, but the system wouldnt load up, it 'halted' during bootup and wouldnt continue even after i pulled out the USB cable. So i'm not yet at the stage where i can say definitively that these drivers are corrupted since i don't think i'm applying them correctly. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. ps i'm using Windows XP Pro SP 3, and the modem is a RCA DCM 425. |

Re: Getting modem drivers to work
Hi,
Will the computer boot into Safe Mode? Reboot the Laptop and keep tapping the F8 key. Select Safe Mode. Uninstall the drivers you installed. Post the make and model of both your Laptop and the Modem. You could always call MS to activate your XP. Bill |

Re: Getting modem drivers to work
Thanks, I may end up calling them to activate if i'm not able to get up and running.
The laptop is an old one a Compaq Presario 700. The modem like above is a RCA DCM 425 cable modem. OK, so I followed those steps and rebooted into safe mode and deleted the drivers that were sitting in C and it still isn't working. Any other ideas how I can get the machine to tak to the modem via USB? I was not given an installation CD by the cabe company - their techs have to perform the installation which they did on my desktop when i began the account. Thanks |

Re: Getting modem drivers to work
Hi,
Are you now able to get back into windows in normal mode? If so here is the manual: http://www.simplehelp.net/images/cab...RCA_DCM425.pdf This will give you detailed instruction how to connect via USB or Tutatorial: http://www.timewarnercable.com/centr...nstallusb.html Try the drivers of this site: http://www.insight-com.com/help-bb-7106.htm Scroll down to RCA DCM 425 Extract the drivers to a new folder (name the folder so you know what and where it is). Browse to this folder when you go through the hardware wizard. Hope this helps. Bill Last edited by BCCOMP; 01-22-2009 at 05:30 AM. |
