found new hardware

hello all my laptop (Dell inspiron 2200 crappy yes i am well aware) can't add any new devices such as external hard drives, mp3 players or even simple memory card readers. i can open the device manager and under Other devices with a yellow questions mark it lists the SanDisk Sansa Fuze, or my Maxtor Hard drive. the found new hardware manager pops up then prompts me to install software automatically. i click next and then it displays bit yellow question mark and little magnifying glass trying to find something. but then it won't work and i am now unable to use any new devices, which really blows cause why else would i buy them if not to use them!? and these devices work fine on other computers just not mine. so do i need a driver? or have i deleted something i really shouldn't have, cause i don't remember doing so. so please any and all help will be much appreciated!
