WinXP doesn't detect my modem so I can't connect to internet[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Can someone tell me how to set it up? IT's broadband, the modem is external and connected to a netgear router. THe modem does not come with a disk.

Re: WinXP doesn't detect my modem so I can't connect to internet

How are you try to connect(hard-wired or wireless) from the router?

Have you tried unplugging the modem and router then reconnecting?

Normally you don't need software for the modem unless install usb drivers.

Hard wired from the router

I did try unplugging the modem, I haven't tried the router, than reconnecting and it failed to detect.

Your setup should be similar to the diagramp below.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...&ct=image&cd=1

You should have the router connected to the modem and then connect the pc to the router.

Well, since my WInXP Is a fresh install I forgot that the netgear isn't installed therefore I can't really do those steps. THe netgear router works for the computers that connect to it wireless.

By "fresh install" you mean you recently reinstalled windows?

If that the case then you need to make sure that all the drivers have been installed.

Open the run box and type "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes.

Do you have anything under other devices?

As in a complete reinstall and wipe of my whole hard drive. I'm trying to get the files that I Need onto my usb drive but linux doesn't allow me to put files on it because of the filesystem.

Re: WinXP doesn't detect my modem so I can't connect to internet[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Would I Need the drivers for both my router and my modem to have it detected by the computer? I thought that the modem was supposed to be detected first but I'll try.

If you did a Clean install of XP, did you check your Device Manager for any errors (yellow !). If you have errors please post what they are.

As far as the Modem and Router goes you should not need drivers for them.

Re: WinXP doesn't detect my modem so I can't connect to internet[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

The Chipset driver will remove the SM Bus Controller error.
The Network Diver will remove the Ethernet Controller error.
Go back into the Device Manager and make sure the above errors are gone.

Once these are installed power off ALL systems (All PC's, Laptops, Modem and Router)
Power up the Modem and wait untill ALL lights are solid.
Power up the Router and wait until All lights are solid.
Power up this Gateway Machine (I am thinking it is already connected to the modem and router correctly)
This should get you on the Internet.
Let me know, then we will see about the other drivers you need.
Bill

Re: WinXP doesn't detect my modem so I can't connect to internet[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Glad to hear you are able to get on the internet.
Now for the rest of these drivers.
Go to the device manager and post the remaining errors.
On these errors I want you to Right Click>Properties>Details Tab
Post the VEN/DEV numbers you find Under device instance ID (for each error)
Thanks,
Bill

Re: WinXP doesn't detect my modem so I can't connect to internet[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Hi
If you have not done so do do an MS Update:
You should have XP SP2 installed (DO NOT INSTALL SP3) If this is installed you can install these drivers (In Order).

MS UAA Driver:
http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/arc.../11/81540.aspx
Scroll down to Q888111 for your Service Pack

Audio:
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=216767516

This should give you your sound back.
Double check for any remaining errors in the Device Manager and post them if you have any.
Thanks,
Bill
