Monitor: stuck on Default

Hello,

I pick up a Dell Dimension 2400 from a thrift store for my Mother, but soon discovered that the screen resolution is lock in and can not be changed. This resolution is very small and is incompatible with installing the Internet on this Computer (I try at&t and aol from CD ROM) and get a error message.

I went into Device Manager and clicked on Monitor and got some Yellow Question mark symbols(?).I think this Computer is missing the Drivers for the Monitor, the problem is I can't go on Dell's web site to download the Monitor Drivers into this Computer because I can not installing the Internet on it in the first place.

I think I can burn the Monitor Drivers onto a CD ROM (my computer does not have one, I can use my aunts computer) I have never burned a CD before.Anyway, how is this Dell computer going to know how to install this Driver CD, the only thing on this computer is windowsXP ?

Thanks
Joey

Re: Monitor: stuck on Default

Hi,
Go to the device manager and post all errors (yellow!)
Right click on the monitor error and uninstall. Reboot
You should not have to have drivers for the monitor. What you may need is the drivers for your Video Card (Graphics)

Hi BCCOMP,

What does "post all errors" mean ? I didn't see anything about"monitor error" on the computer, also I can't download anything into this computer Because the screen resolution is frozen and its the wrong setting for the start up CD to install a internet service.

Re: Monitor: stuck on Default

HI Bluegill,
If you go into the Device Manager you may see unknown devices or devices that are in error. They could have a yellow or red ! or ? next to them (like your monitor).
I need to know what these errors are (if any).

Re: Monitor: stuck on Default

It appears this PC just was formatted and reinstalled without the drivers
Go to this site and download and install these in order:

Chipset:
http://support.dell.com/support/down...7&fileid=56457

This should remove the SM Bus Controller error

Network Controller:
http://support.dell.com/support/down...5&fileid=84196

This should remove the Network Controller error and get you on the internet (Broadband)

Multimedia Audio Controller:
http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=122481

This should remove the Multimedia Audio Controller error and you should have sound (from Speakers)

This should remove all the errors except the Video Controller
Once the above drivers are installed go back to the device manager and post any remaining errors.
Also on these errors I want you to Right click>Properties>Details Tab
Post the VEN/DEV numbers you see under Device Instance ID.

Re: Monitor: stuck on Default

If you have a Broadband (dsl) connection already up and running you just have to hardwire the PC to the Modem or router. No CD Required.
The thing you may have to do is download the drivers (CHIPSET & NETWORK Controller) off a PC that does have an internet connection and burn them to CD or use a flash Drive.
Then install the drivers to your none working PC.
If you wish to resolve the Video issue you need to give me the VEN/DEV numbers

BUT you need to get the Chipset driver installed FIRST and then the Network Controller.

Hi Bill,
I think it's hopeless, I just ran my XP CD on the computer with a new install, and I came up with the same problem.

PS thanks for your help anyway.

Re: Monitor: stuck on Default

HI,
You are going to have the same issue.
XP only loads generic drivers you need to install the correct drivers in the order I posted above. It is not that hard. You just need a pc that is connected to the internet and download the drivers I posted to CD or Flash Drive and install them on youe Dell 2400.

Re: Monitor: stuck on Default

Hi BlueGill
On your AUNTS PC you will need to Go to the DELL Website and input the info for your DELL 2400. You will see a window open up for your drivers. You will need to download the driver I posted above and Burn them to CD. To make it easier I will tell you what drivers you need FROM the Dell Website:
CHIPSET: It is the ONLY one on the list
Network Controller:Broadcom 4401 Integrated NIC (2nd one on the list of Network)
Multimedia:Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio.
When you go to DOWNLOAD these drivers and SAVE them. YOU will be asked WHERE to SAVE them. SAVE them to you AUNTS CD( D: or E: depending) and Burn them to CD.
Once burned to CD put the CD in your Dell and open MY Computer.
Go to the CD-ROM and click on it to Open it. Once opened run the Setup EXE files.
