[SOLVED] video controller problem
Hey.
Need help for my 3 headed monster....a year ago I bought a Hp pavillon notebook (dv6000 series, 6642ca) and was fitted with vista. Like a few people, I really got angry at vista since I couldn't use my softwares without cursing to get drivers and even sometimes it didn't work at all, not to mention all those unclear security features. So I asked the future shop dude to remove vista and install xp. Obviously, they had a hard time to fit that with the SATA hd, but in the end it worked fine. They created a recovery disc and I taught everything was on the disc to perform a full recovery in case of a major crash, which finally happened yesterday. I did a complete format of the computer and tried to re-install xp with their so called recovery disc, but there was a lot of missing drivers. I got the driver detective software and it solved 95% of the problems. Now I have this typical indication in the device manager saying there is no driver for the video controller. I tried to install nvidia geforce for xp, but it's saying that there is no compatible driver on the computer for installation. Tried to get help with a Hp tech, but his idea was to go back with vista. No thanks! How can I fix this video controller problem? Maybe I did something wrong in the steps of installing all these drivers? (I mean, maybe there are drivers that needs to be installed before or after others?) |

Re: video controller problem
Hey thanks for the link!
I downloaded a whole lot of things....but unfortunately, i'm still having the video controller problem (in the device manager, it's saying there is no driver)...and when I try to move windows, it's slow and it's leaving traces (like if it was sticking). Same thing when I scroll down, it's really slow and erratic. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help! |

Re: video controller problem
hi mike
Well that's a good question!...I just don't know how to go check that. The only thing I know is that this computer has 2.0 Go of RAM. The HD is using 11gig of the 232gig available. Maybe it could be useful to know: the display wrongness was there before I started installing even one driver. It didn't improve or got worse along the way. Is there a way to go check if I maxed out my RAM capabilities? Thanks again Last edited by dgilz; 11-20-2008 at 12:11 AM. |

Re: video controller problem
It seems finding driver support for your card is a little tricky. You may have to try a couple different ones before finding one that works. If you didn't know the driver you are looking for is for the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
This one claims to work, but I can't say it will for sure.

Re: video controller problem
Hi elf
I already tried to install the nvidia 8400 GS driver, but when I try to install it, I get the message saying there is no compatible driver on my computer to install this, so the installation stops right after that. I know that it was the original video controller factory installed when vista was on my computer. Obviously, I didn't check what was the driver series (I only know it's a nvidia product) before I did the complete format of my computer, since I taught everything was on the recovery disc the so called professional technician at future shop created!....one thing I know is that I'm out of business with these dudes. |

Re: video controller problem
Your driver disk probably does have drivers for your specific card. The problem is HP designed that laptop to use Vista and probably did not make drivers for that card on XP.

Re: video controller problem
yeah....but before I had to do a full format to get rid of a virus after a lot of efforts, everything was working fine, no problems at all. I could play games, my internet browser was as sweet as possible. each and every device were working like champs. So the thing is that it is possible to run xp perfectly on this computer, but how?....I'm close, but it's not perfect. My best bet would be to find someone who did the same installation on the same computer, but after a lot of research, it seems that most of people have problems with the SATA HD, a problem that I don't have (at least, these drivers were presents on the recovery CD the future shop guys created). Do you know anyone who did that?

Re: video controller problem
I've had success using modded drivers on a Dell before, but the ones I used are no longer available in the mobile version. Laptopvideo2go has some drivers that are supposed to work with the 8400M GS and Asus/HP-Compaq. You would have to do some reading on the install process. Here's a link to a short walkthrough. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...p?showtopic=33
And here's the drivers they say work. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=16927 They list the mobile cards that they work on and yours is there, though you have to scroll way down to find it. Make sure you read the walkthrough first, if not the faq's and such, you'll need to replace the nvidia inf file with a modded version. Don't know if it works or not, but might be worth a shot.
