Compaq Presario V3000 No disc Drive Found

I dont quite understand what is going on with my laptop. Never had any problems before today. I have tried everything and I dont want to revert to recovery discs. because the ones made in the store the day i bought it. and that is so far back. anyway I dont know what to do.
I installed some updates but i did it automatically so i didnt see them. i rarely ever do that. and this time i feel it screwed something up.
I also just recently installed Internet Explorer 8.. i dont know. Im just giving info. if anyone can help me i would sooo appreciate it.

Is this the Harddrive you are referring to or the CD-ROM.
Does the BIOS (Setup) Program see these drives?

I have no cd-rom drive found on my computer anywhere.
it needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled but i dont know how to go about doing that. i cant afford much right now.
i do on the other hand have the back up discs that was created the day i bought the laptop. but i dont want to revert back that far. considering i havent been able to create my own back up files.

You are confusing me!

Does the computer BOOT to WinXP and you are able to use it (except maybe the CD-ROM).
Is the issue is you have NO CD-ROM working?
What is the make and model of this laptop
