windows unable to load device driver

My brother has a pioneer DVD RW DVR 115D dvd drive and it wont work.Known functioning drives wont work on his computer.Windows cannot load device driver.Have uninstalled device.Windows recognises new hardware correctly on start up but still cannot load drivers.I have downloader the driver of the net and tried to install but then I get a small black box saying cannot find target.explorer.exe always encounters a problem and has to close, I don't know if this is related.
He's running xp.
