[SOLVED] Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Hello, I have an issue with HP since I need the recovery disk for this specific compaq desktop pc I just purchased second hand (2006 end release).

It will not load my OS XP Pro since it does need the original HP Compaq drivers first. HP is not really ready to help ansd they direct you to a company that will charge you a lot to send you the relevant recovery cds.

Is there a way to start up the computer with XP pro using the readily available (from HP site) hardware drivers (video card, dvd drive etc). But I have no idea how to start...

Many thanks for your assistance.

Hello, Thanks for your feed-back. No I am not downdrading to XP. The point is that I purchased this computer in France via Ebay but is a unit made for the Dutch market ! The hard drive is brand new (Seagate 320GB) and the seller did not have the original Compaq recovery CDs that will do the full format and install the proprietary Compaq driver in order to install the XP pro (licenced) OS. Hp online chat technician promissed me to give me the link (via email) to their ressources in order to download the CDs content. But they never did ! I am sure that their is a way to install the OS using some basic Compaq drivers such as Video drivers or DVD drivers, but I do not know how to logically do it...

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Hi,
Is this a SATA HD and does the BIOS Detect it?
Are you getting an error message when attempting to install XP?
Is your XP Pro disc SP2?
In the BIOS is Sata (raid) set to IDE? If not, set to IDE if you have the option and the try to install XP.

If you still have issues you may need the RAID driver here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ional&lang=eng

Install instructions here:
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/16012/ENG/readme.txt

You may need to slipstream XP (SP2) and the Raid driver to a CD if you do not have a floppy drive. Instructions are here on how to do it:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How...P-installation

Or Nlite (maybe easier):

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...-installation/

The rest of the drivers for your unit are here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...307509&lang=en

Besure to have SP2 installed and load the chipset driver first.

Hope this helps,
Bill

stop = OX 0000007E (0xc0000005,oxF748EQBF,OXF78DA208,OXF78D9F08)
PCI.sys - address F748E0BF
Base at F7487000, dteastamp 3b7d855c

Then the system freezes...

The only trouble is I cannot access the SATA drive via my XP bootable (no it doesn't include the SP2 patch). Yes the bios sees the drive (which is brand new by the way). The bios of the machine says RAID by default.

HP was nice to finally send me these, however they say the install the drivers first onto the disk, but right now the OS won't let me access it. I even tried the bootable DOS Seagate diagnostic on a cd, but the dvd drive won't boot on it ...

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

I would suggest trying my previous post (Slipstream). You will need SP2 to install the drivers HP gave you AFTER the OS is installed.
When you slipstream besure to install XP, SP2 and the raid driver as previously posted.

Hi Jeffcompaq,
Forgot to mention to disconnect all printers, Lan connections etc. until after the install of the OS. Then connect your accessories and install the proper drivers.

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Hello,
Yes thanks, I did read that somewhere. But my computer is brand new and there is no connection to any peripherial attachement. I bought it from a person, here in France, that could not start it on account of missing original cds' (he did try but failled !), and bought instead a factory configured new laptop and stuffed with softwares running on Vista... That is why I inherited it together with this challenging IT project !

Just one question. Which procedure would you choose for the slipstream XP ? The maximumpc.com/article procedure or the Nlite ? The maximumpc seem quite complex. Is there a risk when downloading the Nlite software ? Also I cannot find the SP2 patch with microsolft. For the XP Pro a SP3 seems now the only option, and you cannot download it either to make a standalone CD (the computer should connect to microsolft site and they do the upgrade online ...). that is a catch 22 since my computer is not yet running on any OS !

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Hi,
Here is a link for SP2
http://www.soft32.com/Download/Free/...2/4-992-1.html
IMO I consider it safe.
Nlite may be easier to use.

But now I have a question?
In the BIOS what does it give you for OPTIONS as far as the SATA/RAID?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Hello,
Thanks for the SP2 direct link.

To answer your question re: Bios

When you go to the 1st (and only for my machine) hard drive and click for details, the bios gives you :
- SMART SUPPORT
= NCQ supported
= Transfer mode UDMAS
= SATA mode SATA - II (3.06Gps)

If you then go on the Advance folder you get :
in SATA MODE
- RAID
- IDE
or - AHCI (never heard about this one !)

What I did for this Bios is to set it to "factory default" (which in fact set the HD to RAID mode.

I will have more time this WE (I hope) to finalise all this information kindly provided !
Cheers,
JEFF

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Set the BIOS to detect the IDE Drive for SATA under your advance settings. This may safe you the trouble of Slipstreaming. Once the OS is installed and fully operational you can the change the Bios to AHIC (preferably) or Raid

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Well, the Bios seems not to be the solution with this computer equiped with SATA drive...

I think have made progress this WE... and believe that there is only the Slipstreaming solution that is relevant.

By reading more data about this issue I found that :

- The solution with the SATA drive is built in within the Chipset drivers provided by HP which is for the SR2089NL the SP26800.EXE program.

- Therefore I now have : The XP Pro software (in French) the SP2 (I now found it in French to match the OS). These two are loaded on a hard drive in my server (compaq proliant 3000)

- I managed to unpaq the drivers for XP (.inf I presume) out of the .EXE by using the WinRar software (I failed using the -A -P: unexpand procedure given by Intel...). These files are now located on a folder in my server.

- I have downloaded Nlite but had trouble installing it on my server. It runs on Window 2000 Server with SP4. It needed a microsoft program I had to install first which needs a lot of drive space. The trouble is that the OS Win 2000 server is on a fix C: partition which is only 1GB !

Of course the Server has a lot of free hard drive memory, but on other partitions and Hard drives.

Therefore I need to repartition the C drive by merging it with say the D drive in order to install Nlite and other software to make the job possible !

Do you know a (free) software similar to partition magic, that could run on Windows 2000 Server ???

Thanks in advance for your suggestion(s).

Cheers,

JEFF

Re: Compaq Presario SR2089NL Media Center full recovery

Hello, I am back after a few weeks of absence...

I wish to thank you for all your precious support since this issue is now closed.

I had to rebuild an old Compaq Deskpro PII is order to work on the Slipstrean project as suggested by Bill. I could not face moving partition on my very old Proliant 3000 Compacq running on Windows 2000 Server !

So with the Desk pro equiped with a large SCSI HD and running on XP Pro SP2 (French) I managed the Slipsteam with Nlite.

I must admit that what save my life as regard to the Presario SR2089NL was that I have added an old 3.5 diskette drive to it ! Then I was able to run from a Diskette the SEATOOLS HD software because the SATA HD in the new computer is a Barracuda 320GB from Seagate. The Seatools was able to recognise the HD and to fully format it. It also gave me the indication of the type of Intel Processor into the machine (ICH8) which was precious information as well for the next steps.

Then I tried to get some software from ASUS because the MB is an P5BW-LA. But it was not available from ASUS because this MB was tailored made for this particular computer COMPAQ / HP...

Back to Intel web site were I was able to download the corresponding Chipset drivers for the PCI SATA complex infrastructure !

Thank thanks to Bill suggestion I used the Nlite to prepare the SP2 version of my XP Pro CD.

Trouble reapeared when I tried to make the OS CD bootable. I never did that before ! I used the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 that came with my philips CD writer. But I failed many times.
The Set up on the writing software as to be VERY accurated keyed in, and you have to download a boot.ini file from somewhere first...

But it is done !

Starting the OS in the new computer failed many more times. I succeeded just because I still had the old 3.5 diskette drive in it and was then able to load the Chipset drivers with the F6 prompt !

Well it was quite an adventure in the land of propriatory software for propriatory computers (I mean Compaq...).

It is so much time consumming also. I saved the EUR 40 Asled by HP france (USD 60) in the process I learn a lot thank to Bill and this techsupport forum !!!

If you have a identical problem with a similar Compaq PC with SATA drives feel free to ask me.

Best regards

Jean-Francois

ps : NEVER GIVE UP
