Since reformatting XP SP2, I am unable to connect to Internet

Hi I just reformatted my Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 to XP Service pack 2. I am now unable to connect to the internet. When I look at the devices there is a yellow question mark (?) for the “Ethernet”? I have no knowledge of PC’s as you can probably tell. How do I find out what drivers I need, as the Ethernet is not named? And as I have no Internet connection I can only post and receive any answers you may have while at work. I apologise in advance if this questions has been asked and answered previously. I’m new to this sire. Thank you in advance for your time.

Toshiba Satellite, a laptop.

BIG mistake doing a vanilla install of WinXP. Laptops are unique animals in the PC world. They need unique drivers and configurations. You should have use the recovery CDs that came with the system, they will get you back to the original configuration when you got the laptop new.

and welcome to the Forum

You should be able to find all your drivers on the Toshiba support site. Probably other applications as well.

Nothing wrong with a clean install of XP . . I prefer it to the restoration features most manufacutrers use . . they include all the crapware that came on it originally.

Rather than download the 100 or so updates since SP2, suggest you install SP3 while the system is fresh

Edit : look here for the Network adaptor driver

Re: Since reformatting XP SP2, I am unable to connect to Internet

Hi thanks for your advice / opinion. I did say I was not literate in this field however I didn’t have the original disks hence the complete re-format. With the only disk I could obtain.

Thanks again take care

Thank you, for being so patient with me and offering further help.

I truly am an amateur, I went to the Toshiba web site as suggested but when it got to the “Driver Type” that I need, I didn’t know what to pick/ chose?

I am baffled as to what it is I need initially, for the internet to work.
I have added some more information about my laptop that may help you understand what this mad woman is on about.

Toshiba Satellite Pro A200
Model: PSAE1E-01H****

In the Driver Device section ALL the following have Yellow Question marks:

Ethernet controller x2
Mass Storage controller
PCI Device
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I am guessing that once I can get the laptop on line I will be able to update any other drivers.

Thank you, so much for your time which is truly appreciated.

From the Driver page on Toshiba's website . . download the Chipset, Display and LAN driver, and copy to flash drive or burn to CD

Install those in that order and that should be enough to get you online to download and install the others directly to the pc.

Most of the !'s will go away when you load those three drivers. You can then get the others

Brilliant thank you so much, all that you said suggested seems to have worked. The only thing is I have not been able to connect to the internet so far. I done all that you suggested at work; and when I put the internet cable from my work pc to the laptop it takes awhile to Not connect.

I think works IT department may have done something to their network so that people can’t just connect. So I will take the laptop home tonight and try it out at home.

I am so grateful for all your help and support, but ask that I can keep this contact with you till I am up and running on the internet. You’re a genius. Thank you so much. Lorrayne
