Wrong Drivers[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

Vista keeps installing the wrong drivers for my DLink WG-520 wireless adapter, it installs drivers for an atheros adapter. What can I do to fix this I have downloaded the right drivers and tried to install them but windows keeps replacing them with the atheros drivers.

Re: Wrong Drivers

ZenFire,

Atheros is the chipset around which many D-Link Wireless products (including yours) are designed. Question - does the Atheros driver work?

I believe you have a "D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520" - there are 2 revisions of that product so you need to identify the correct rev of the hardware you own.

Read this:

Re: Atheros Communications Inc. - Networking - D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520

Its not recommended to install hardware driver updates from the windows
update website. It takes microsoft a while to get permission to release the
driver updates through their site and there is usually a better/newer driver
released on the manufacturers website. You can browse for your specific
model on this website:

http://support.dlink.com/downloads/

I'm thinking those Atheros chipset drivers are from a Vista update. You may want to uninstall that update.

Go to D-Link's site, identify your model and download the drivers for your OS.

Re: Wrong Drivers[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

It works but my signal strength was always excellent while with these drivers it's only good. I had done a reinstall of Vista and the previous install had the right drivers. Also I have downloaded the right drivers but like I say I don't know how to stop Vista from replacing them everytime I install them. The only thing that really works is if I install the whole software package with the Dlink monitoring software(which is not compatible with vista).

How will I know which update to uninstall?

Re: Wrong Drivers[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

ZenFire,

Look on the bar code on your D-Link adapter. Does it say "H/W: A1" or "V.B1"? I ask because there are two hardware revisions of that model.

Can you do a selective install of the working D-Link software WITHOUT the Vista incompatible monitoring software? Some installs let you do a custom or expert install and select only the components you wish to install.

To check for updates, go into Control Panel, Windows Update and find the link that shows you update history. This should bring up a list of all updates installed. Look for anything related to Atheros, D-Link or WiFi related updates.

While there ARE vista drivers for this product on D-Link's website - this is a discontinued product, so getting support for Vista might be an issue.

D-Link recommends replacing this with their "WDA-2320 Range Booster G Desktop Adapter":

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=471

I'm personally NOT a big fan of D-Link products. I've had many problems with their broadband wired/wireless routers. I would suggest the Linksys WMP300N Wireless PCI adapter:

http://www.google.com/products?hl=en...&um=1&ie=UTF-8

I'm experiencing lots if Vista issues related to both wired and wireless network hardware. In many cases - it's buggy or incompatible drivers - drivers which worked fine under XP, but NOT under Vista. Eventually, Microsoft and the hardware mfg's will sort this out - but until then, this seems to be a sticky point when migrating XP-based PCs over to Vista.
