Wndows XP Pro Startup Problem

Hi,This problem recently started.I turn on my computer and it stops at the first screen with the message "Disk Boot Failure,Insert System Disk and press Enter. However I pressed Enter by chance without any Disk in the machine and it automatically started loading Windows properly. And appears to be working OK although Internet Explorer seems slower.
At some point in the intial stages of this problem the Found New Hardware tool told me it had found Multimedia Audio Controller.I accidentally clicked on "don,t show this message again" so I can,t see it now.I,ve been searching for a solution on the net and checked Device Manager which shows Multimedia Audio Controller under other devices with a question mark and an exclamation mark.It says it is enabled but has no drivers.Location PCI bus 0, device 2, function 7.The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28).Of course I don,t know if this has anything to do with the problem.I have Soundblaster Live Soundcard and a Gaming Video Card.I,m using Norton Antivirus. The computer has 1GB Ram.I,m not very knowledable about computers but have a keen interest and can follow directions well.I hope somebody can help?

Re: Wndows XP Pro Startup Problem

HI, in Device Manager, right-click on the Multimedia Audio Controller and select Uninstall.
Let windows uninstall it, then immediately restart your pc; windows will then try to and hopefully find a driver for it and install it for you.
If it cannot find a driver for the audio device, get back to us. Good Luck.

Re: Wndows XP Pro Startup Problem

Hi Thanks I tried it but it didn,t work?I had to press Enter to get Windows to load and the driver could not be found. Also I have Norton Systemworks and it says there is a bad registry entry that it cannot fix.Do you think Multimedia Audio Controller might be part of the Boot issue?

Re: Wndows XP Pro Startup Problem

Hi CB,
Here is a link for a Registry Cleaner which i use myself so know it's safe....
http://www.wisecleaner.com/download.html
Download and run the free version.

But first, could you go back into Device Manager, right-click on the media controller and choose Properties. Under details it will give you a drop down box and you will find on that list an entry named "hardware ID"..............should look something like this...
FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_1988&SUBSYS_104381E1
and give me that ID.
This will let me identify and find a driver for the component

have a look at this....

Re: Wndows XP Pro Startup Problem

Also, if you feel up to it, you could insert your xp disk, don't let it autoplay.
Press Start, go to Accessories and Command Prompt and type in the following command,
sfc/scannow
this verifies every system file on your pc and replaces any bogus ones........................although after that you need to vist windows update and update all your files again.
We will sort this!
