Blank DVD-RW not recognised

Hello
Not sure if in right area & have read alot of info on a lot of web sites none of which has solved my problem, so I'm turning to you.....
I just bought some new DVD-RW (Verbatim) and my PC (HP pavilion with Win XP) will not recognise the blank dvds. My DVD player/writer is a Pionner DVD-RW DVR-106D 1.07, I've checked on the pioneer web site and the driver is up to date. I use Nero to burn my DVD's and it doesnt detect the blank DVD either. I have tried unactivating and then reactivating the drive but no change. I have uninstalled HP DLA and Veritas and installed InCD but no change either. The DVD-RW do not work in my Sony DVD player/hard disk that we use in the lounge either 'Disc Error'. Is this a formating problem ? I'm not sure what to do other than chuck the lot in the bin ! Any advice would be grateful.
Thanks

Re: Blank DVD-RW not recognised

Welcome to TSF.

Does the drive work with other DVD/CD brands?
If so, the discs are incompatible with the drive. A firmware update might help.

Look in "My computer" - is the drive recognized as DVD-RW?

Re: Blank DVD-RW not recognised

Hello
Yes the drive is a Pionneer DVD-RW DVR-106D 1.07. I have checked on the Pioneer web site if my drive is up to date and it is. Imust admit that I generally use +rw discs & they work fine but I bought -rw ones as they are more compatible with our DVD hard drive in lounge. These discs wont work in any of our dvd writers which annoys & intrigues me ! I tried downloading Incd to try & format the discs but it doesnt recognise them either ????
Any thoughts ?

Re: Blank DVD-RW not recognised

I'd guess the the discs are incompatible.
How old is the drive?

There's a later firmware (1.08) version available for your drive - that might help.

Re: Blank DVD-RW not recognised

When the burner won't burn the Verbatim discs they are, most likely, not compatible.
The drive is rather old, isn't it? The latest firmware is from 2004.
Many drives last 2-3 years - not more.

Regarding standalone DVD players:
A lot of will only accept either "+" or "-" formats.

Re: Blank DVD-RW not recognised

Thank you four advice. I have actually managed to burn a video file onto the disc using my husband's more recent PC (Dell) and I can view the DVD on my DVD player in lounge so I guess I didnt find the answer I was looking for but have found a compromise !
Thanks again !

Re: Blank DVD-RW not recognised

You're welcome.

The quickest, easiest and best solution (IMHO), would be to replace the drive if it's old.
DVD burners are cheap these days.
