Old computer, fresh OS install, no sound. drivers maybe?
I recently reconstructed an old computer I had lying around. The OS I installed Windows XP Professional with SP2, the Motherboard is a Foxconn 400M01-G-6L with one stick of 512 RAM in it. I tried installing the "On-Board Audio 32Bit AC97 Driver" and "System/Chipset 32Bit Driver" that I found here but with no luck, still no sound. I've checked/tested the speakers and they work fine/play sound, but not when attached to the computer :/. And I've made sure that everything is unmuted. I've tried nearly everything I can think of but I'm clueless
. Any ideas? If I can't get the sound to work, its not a BIG deal, but still, would be nice if it worked :) Any help appreciated.

Re: Old computer, fresh OS install, no sound. drivers maybe?
nope, no yellow/red error marks anywhere under any category. Here's a pic of the "Sound video and game controllers" if that would help at all (I dunno)
![]() As for the BIOS thing, I have no idea. I usually don't mess around with the BIOS, but I'll LOOK around the BIOS real quick and see if I can figure anything out, then I'll edit this post. EDIT: Well I didn't really figure anything out :/ There wasn't any simple options like "Sound? YES/NO" so I was basically lost haha. I would have no idea which option to change :/ Last edited by silentfox618; 03-17-2008 at 10:48 PM. |

Enter BIOS by tapping the <Del> key when the computer is starting.
In BIOS >> Integrated peripherals >> VIA onchip PCI device >> Enable "VIA-3058 AC97 Audio". Save and exit BIOS. Install a newer chipset driver from VIA: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_h...npro_v515a.zip Reboot. Open Control Panel >> Add or remove programs >> Remove the sound driver/software. Install this audio driver: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/vinyl_v700b.zip Reboot again. |

Try playing a music CD with Media player. Does the "graph" move?
Are you absolutely sure the speakers are connected to the correct sound port? Last edited by Deleted090308; 03-19-2008 at 03:29 PM. |

It should be working now.
I have to admit that I'm out of ideas. If you really want sound I'd suggest getting a cheap $20 sound card. (if you do that - remember to disable the onboard sound chip and remove the VIA sound driver first) |
