automatic reinstall of USB keyboard and mouse

I have a friend who has a problem whenever he removes and reinserts his USB keyboard and mouse. Every time he does this, it pops up with a warning about not being able to verify the driver, and a continue button. Well, he can't click the continue button because the keyboard and mouse are not yet installed.

Shouldn't the warning only appear the first time you install the USB keyboard and mouse? He is using Windows XP Pro 32-bit, and I've seen other XP computers require no action when you reinsert the USB devices.

This is a possible misconfiguration in the BIOS. If there are drivers involved? Then check the MFG. site for updates. But, start in the BIOS and check your USB settings. You might want to check the "STOP on error" settings for the keyboard too.

Re: automatic reinstall of USB keyboard and mouse

I doubt it has anything to do with the BIOS. I'm at my desktop, and I unplug my USB keyboard. Then I plug it back in. At the bottom right corner, that icon with the crossed wires shows up, which shows when windows detects any new device. Then I get the popup which says that windows couldn't verify the publisher, and I have to hit the continue button. The problem is that this popup appears before the driver is installed, and the input device doesn't respond until AFTER the driver is installed. So, I have to shut down the computer, unplug the USB keyboard and mouse, and plugin a PS/2 mouse. Then I turn on the computer, and I have access to the PS/2 mouse automatically. Then I can plug in the USB stuff and click that darn continue button.

I've seen this type of behavior on USB devices, especially those older Gateway machines that only had USB connections. I've also seen where this type of behavior can be turned on or off in the BIOS. But, that was a configuration of how USB devices are enumerated. This is not a normal feature of a motherboard. But several ABit and Gigabyte motherboards have this configuration ability. This, also, can be configure by a setup program for your keyboard.

Ok, first question. Has this behavior been like this all along? If not can you roughly tell when this behavior started?

Second question. Have you updated the drivers for the USB device recently?

Re: automatic reinstall of USB keyboard and mouse

It started a week ago, but he had the computer for a year. He only switched to USB a week ago, and has been using PS/2 before then. I remember having to go into BIOS and enable the option to use a USB keyboard and mouse to get it working. The keyboard came with an installation CD, which we used. The mouse did not. It only needed the installation CD the first time, but after that it still popups with that warning whenever I unplug and replug the keyboard. Is there a way to disable all these warnings that windows could not verify the publisher? It seems like a useless feature to me.

Re: automatic reinstall of USB keyboard and mouse

I did some searching online, and I might have found a solution. Look at this.

I'll see if that solves it, and let you all know.

That's a winner for me. I've bookmarked that one for future use.

Thanks.
