[SOLVED] New installation - No sound driver
Hi everybody,
My computer recently crashed due to a hard disk error (no real damage done, since I had everything on an external server). I simply reinstalled XP Pro, and everything got deleted. However, the one driver I could not get is the sound driver. I have a sound card - I seem to remember that my computer used SigmaTel before I reinstalled. Thus, I can't play any sounds, nor is there a mixer device. I've already visited Dell support, but everything there is simply an upgrade, if the original drivers are there, I can't find them. So now I'm here. Does anybody know how I can get a sound driver for a Dell DM051, Pentium 4 3.0 GHz CPU, and BIOS version A00? |

Hi,
What is the model of the Dell? DMO51 is the motherboard. If you have the service tag that would be great. Thanks, Bill |

Re: New installation - No sound driver
Hi,
The first driver you should install is the Chipset (If you have not already): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/deta...eng&prdmap=954 Do a Full Microsoft Update The Sigmatel Audio (If you are sure that is what you had): http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=150155 Just for your info, you don't need the original. Some of these are updated to fix certain issues. Let us know how you make out. Bill Last edited by BCCOMP; 02-02-2008 at 10:03 PM. |

Re: New installation - No sound driver
I have no idea why this happened.
When I tried to download the first one, and ran Lang.exe, it said that I can't run it because I don't even have service pack 1 installed! Why's that? |

Re: New installation - No sound driver
Hi,
Sorry my fingers gave you the wrong link. Try this one (Chipset): http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=150654 and then this one (Audio): http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=150155 Have you done a full Microsoft update after the new install? Thanks, Bill PS- I double checked the links this time |

Re: New installation - No sound driver
The chipset seems right this time.
It gives me the error "The file 'usbehci.sys' on [Unknown] is needed." and then asks me to find the file. Do you happen to know how to get that? (Yeah, this installation CD I acquired from a friend of mine, and it contains absolutely nothing - but he's already managed to install it successfully onto a computer already and it still has full functionality) Also, sorry it this seems noobish, but how do you do a full Microsoft Update? |

Re: New installation - No sound driver
Hi,
It sounds like the XP CD is not SP2. So do a full MS Update by going to Start > All programs > Windows Update. This should correct the file you are missing. Thanks, Bill |

Hi z911122!!
I'll help you together with Bill (which is my mentor ) here ![]() So, did you install the chipset first followed by audio driver? If the audio is still not working, post the screenshot of Device Manager here as Bill said before. If you get any error message, don't forget to include the screenshot too here

Re: New installation - No sound driver
Sorry about the late reply, I finally figured out to use the full reply rather than the quick reply.
So attached is the error. Oh yeah, yesterday I failed the update on the genuine XP checker. So maybe the problem isn't solvable. |

Re: New installation - No sound driver
Quote:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\usbehci.sys That file should have been easy to find as that directory is in the %PATH% statement executed during the boot process. UNLESS something has changed the %PATH" statement! At a guess (key word) something has changed your paths on the computer and that's a bad sign. I'd recommend a virus scan, followed by a malware scan (online). I hope I'm wrong, but if the installation program can't find a file that is in the system path? Then there are only two possibilities. One - file is missing! TWO - path to that area of your system has been deleted and replaced by another programs on %PATH% statement. There is a third possibility! MS messed up the path during your last unsuccessful update. That's been known to happen. You need to find out what the error code was for your unsuccessful authentication on your last visit there. Re: New installation - No sound driver
Yeah, I have a usbuhci, not a usbehci.
So I guess there's no other option. Thanks for your help guys! I'll ask the person who gave me the XP startup disk to see if he has sound driver for me too. |
