[SOLVED] drives
sys.txt
I am looking for drives. I have gone to the Intel site which has what I may need, my deal is knowing what drives to get in order to get it up and running. I have removed Vista and installed XP Pro. What I'm Showing in devise driver are network controller, PCI device, video controller, video controller (VGA compatible). I was not able to transfer the device manager page either threw copy or paint. Thanks (Compaq Presario c500 laptop) Intel) ps, for those who care, if not able to find hdd when trying to install different os on laptop that has vista and is set up for a sata drive. Go into sys. deactivate SATA, reboot and try again, drive well then be recognized. Reactivate when done. The disk does not have the drives installed to see said hdd. Donk |

You Main Chipset is an Intel 9450GM Chipset. If you have been the Microsoft and have ALL the updates installed, including SP2? Then install this driver first and then get back to us if you are still having driver issue, i.e. devices listed in the Device manager with a " ! " or a read " X " on them. Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows* XP (exe) http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1528...2k_xp14323.exe File Size = 17,691 KB Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1452...inst_autol.exe File Size = 2,347 KB Installation of these two files should get most of your machine up and running. Re: drives
I just wanted to add that one reason I have limited access is due to my address. I should have 192.168.!.!, instead I have a 169.254.!.! As of a couple of days ago I did have a good address, but after a couple of my installs yesterday I have now lost it. I am not referring to the installs that I downloaded today from the sites indicated above. Just thought I would let you know, it may narrow it down abit

Re: drives
I can't dig up much of anything on this machine. So we are going to have to do this the old fashion way. let's try this progra here:
http://members.datafast.net.au/dft0802/downloads.htm Download this file: http://members.datafast.net.au/dft08...oads/pci32.zip - - File Size = 267 KB Unzip to a directory of your choice. In that directory place the current copy of this linked file: http://members.datafast.net.au/dft08...ds/pcidevs.txt It will replace the file that came in the archive. It will be newer than the one in the archive, i.e. the file is updated daily at the link above. Run the application and save the report. Either, place it as an attachment, or post it's contents in a message. The file should be, approximately 30 KB in size. I'll go through the file and dig out the parts that need drivers and post the results. HTH Bill |

Re: drives
I downloaded site and file. I have two drives so I downloaded to the drive I was using D: not C: I went into cmd and entered as told to do so. My deal is, do I enter each command and hit enter or is it entered all at once. I'm ask because when I enter each command separately and hit enter it states cannot find drive letter, and If I enter all the command at once it does not recognize the internal command at all. I had also downloaded the newer version or file onto the same site. I looked to see if all the files where there after opening zip, all seemed to be as per. Any advice. It did state that if all files where not present it would not work at all. Is this program something like Everest, or am I way off here. It seems as though it is a program designed to find said drives on just this hardware that are required to run. Kinda like a process of elimination, use what is needed and forget the rest. Oh, and by the why, I have partial use of the net. Only once and awhile will it work, and when it does it will time out, but now and then after waiting for abit it well bring up the page. Unreal. Sorry about the questions but it's a need to know bases on my part, like I said, not the brightest bulb when it comes to this. Again, thanks for the time.
PS, pl's advise on how to donate |

The program once it's running will probe the hardware, NOT the software. The purpose of this program is to see what hardware you have installed on your computer, specifically the PCI BUS. It will not probe any other bus or gather any other type of information from your system. Windows has a bad habit of "hiding" the real devices from being properly enumerated. Some times it will list the "failed" installation of a wrong driver as being the item that IS installed. This will lead you down a merry old path of trying to get the WRONG device installed in the system. That's why I've learned to only barely trust programs like Everest and PCWizard. They, basically, check the registry and report to you what is IN the registry! NOT what is actually in the machine, but what the OS thinks is installed. This action on the part of Windows can cause you to pull your hair out, loss of sleep and generally make it a "bad hair day" all around. A long time ago, the ability of being able to put a floppy disk in a drive and run a DOS based program to do this made it easy to figure out what hardware is installed on a computer. Now that Floppy drives are a rare find on a computer? It makes it difficult to get this information. Especially on 32 bit operating systems. Windows 9x to Vista don't like programs probing around at the "innards" of a computer. It's a real security issue and a valid one too. So most OS's, except Linux Distributions, have code that prevents this. You should be able to open a "DOS Box" under XP and navigate to the drive and directory where you extracted the files and run the program. It's a fairly simple program. As it's one function is to probe the PCI BUS and display the results to your screen. Read the short TXT file that comes with it and it will explain the ways to make the report and then you can post it here. HTH Bill |

Re: drives
I was able to stay online long enough for a few of my updates to start to upload, once windows was validated all seems to have gone my way for a change. the drives that I installed yesterday from the site you had me go to allowed me to find an address long enough to upload my drives. I now have quite a little hot road machine here. I still do not have my pci drive, but now that I can access the net it will be much easier then using a stick to keep moving from one machine to the other. With the program that I have that will allow me to find what pci I should have but don't will help me out a great deal. I do not know if I had mentioned this before on how to donate to this site. it won't be a great deal but every little bite helps. I wish I could do more. you guys are doing a great job, and I thank you. I don't even know if you except donations or not, but if you do let me know where to go in order to do so.

Re: drives
I also wanted to add that I updated my PCI that was showing in other devices, it upload a drive which was for my wireless, Broadcom 802.11g/b wlan [NoDB], I also have a realtek RTL8139 PCI Ethernet adapter A/B/C installed onto my machine, now this is showing up in network adapters, or so it says anyway. These drives now show up in network adapters, my problem with the Explanation marks are showing up in Other devices. What's with that? I would assume once my PCI was installed Other devices would indicate as much. I also could be talking out my. Just thought I'd let you know what is going on within the device manager. We are now down to only two, PCI and unknown device.

Re: drives
I was looking into my devices and it show an Intel 82801 GBM ICH7-M- SATA Controler [A-1] which I have deactivated in order to use the Windows installation disk and never re-activated, could this possible be showing up in Other Devices? Again just running some things over in my head that I have done that may effect the computer in a neg. way. I do not want to re-activate at this point in time now that all is starting to take shape, if you know what I mean. I am sure nothing will happen, but non the less.

Re: drives
Devices, that have "drivers" installed but the device is disabled, in Windows? They WILL show up with problems. I don't have any SATA drives on my machine, but I do have a SATA controller on my machine. I got tired of all the warnings, during boot up and at other times about this. So, I went into the BIOS and disabled my SATA Controller. After that the problems disappeared. If I ever put SATA drives in this machine? All I have to do is ENABLE it in the BIOS and it should work just fine. You should be able to do the same thing in your BIOS, I hope?
